MERGER COMPLETED
10:24 PST 25 OCT 1998
You'll probably notice a few changes to the site. For one, the menu bar has more selections, since the site seems to have grown a few more sections. Second, the Daily Static and Illiad's News have been merged. The Static is now longer than before, but it's still formatted to be printable on standard sheets of paper.

TIMING ISSUES
10:24 PST 21 OCT 1998
Since I'll be doing most of the User Friendly drawing and updating from home in the very near future, the strip won't be updated just before I leave work from now on (which was around 17:00 PST). Instead, I'll be updating the strip a little later, probably closer to midnight. If the new strip isn't there when you normally check, don't panic. Just wait another five hours. :)

GETTING FRIENDLIER
15:54 PST 20 OCT 1998
Rumour has it that our very own listbitch (she calls herself that, really) on the User Friendly Mailing List is willing to consider running a -- get this -- geek matchmaking service. Is that dedication or what? Join the list or mail her to find out more, or to at least egg her on.

THE USER FRIENDLY LIST DIGEST
15:50 PST 20 OCT 1998
The User Friendly Mailing List has gotten so busy that the server op, (Mongo) has asked that everyone switch over to digest mode. Easy enough to do: Send mail to majordomo@chia.net and put subscribe userfriendly-digest in the body. Once you're in, send mail to the listserv again and put unsubscribe userfriendly if you're on the mailing list, or don't send anything at all if you're not. That's it, and it keeps the list manageable. Thanks for putting up with us, Mongo. :)

A MOMENT OF SILENCE
08:01 PST 19 OCT 1998
Jon Postel, the head of the IANA and one of founders of the Internet, passed away yesterday. He was 55.

Mr. Postel was instrumental in guiding the development of the Internet, and leaves behind a legacy that pervades the entire world. His remarkable insight and vision will be sorely missed.

I invite all of you to take a brief minute to look back at what the Internet has become, and what it may yet be, and consider the enormous contribution that Mr. Postel has made.

Rest in peace, Mr. Postel.
