GEEKCORPSDate:Fri Jun 30 13:55:50 2000
When we were contacted by Geekcorps our first reaction was unanimous within the whole UF office "Cool! How can we help these folks?" If you are interested, do contact them soon. The application date is July 1, but we are sure they will accept slightly late UFie apps.

Geekcorps is currently taking applications from volunteers with skills in IT (see below) for an upcoming mission to Ghana in October of 2000. To learn more about this project and to fill out an application, follow this link Geekcorps Ghana 2000

Geekcorps is committed to expanding the benefits of the Internet Revolution internationally. They use information technology to improve the economic prospects of developing nations. Drawing upon great local ideas, they work in partnerships with local businesses. Together, Geekcorps and its partner businesses figure out how to address technical needs. Then Geekcorps selects volunteers with the expertise to meet those needs. Geekcorps trains its volunteers to teach their skills to people from different backgrounds.

Volunteers spend three to six months on-site in developing nations, supported by Geekcorps' in-country staff. They spend their working hours helping the partner businesses. And spend their free time exploring their host country and meeting its people.

Geekcorps is looking for professionals with three or more years experience in software development, systems or network administration, web-based graphic design, business development or sales and marketing. And, of course, they are looking for people with the desire to live overseas and work closely with people from different backgrounds.

Get on over and check out their site and detailed info.

[Kethryvis] UFIE FUND RAISER ZANYNESSDate:Wed Jun 28 18:39:50 2000
#userfriendly regular and DFWUFie list manager Needo has either flipped his lid or someone slipped him some bad caffiene. Listmember Amethyst somehow talked him into wearing a kilt to the next DFWUFies meet *if* UFies raise $500 for the Make a Wish Foundation.

As a special added bonus, if $750 is raised, Listmember Chris "the Cyberfox" Kelley will *also* wear a kilt to said meet!

Now even if you're *not* in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Texas area... you can still donate. I've been promised we'll have pictures available so we can all see how cuuuuuuuuuuuttee Needo looks in a kilt.

So if you want to help the DFW UFies out (I sure am!) send email to kilts@dfwufies.org with your pledge amount, name, and email address. You will then be contacted with a physical address to send your checks to. All pledges must be in by July 15. If nothing else, its a great way to help a good cause.

UFies in kilts. I can't wait to see this!

[Wildcard] SCHEDULED ARS MAINTAINENCE OUTAGEDate:Tue Jun 27 03:30:23 2000
From 19:00 to 23:00 PST today (Tuesday, 6/27/00) UF will be doing a hardware upgrade on the ARS box. If everything goes well, we'll be up by the time the static is in place with loads of ram and a faster CPU. If something bad happens, ARS will be down (sorry, no First Posts(tm)), but the strip will still be in place. Either way, we'll get our daily fix of the cartoon.

[WebDiva D] NOW APPEARING...Date:Mon Jun 26 11:45:17 2000
Our good friend and UFie extraordinaire, Doug (Sirilyan) Sheppard, sent us this link:
Broken By Design - Get Some Clues
For those of you who don't know, Doug and his partner Katrin L. Salyers do the Broken By Design and Waiting for Bob cartoons.

Doug assures me that this particular vignette was taken from real life experience and that only the names have been changed to protect the innocent. Thanks Doug and Katrin!

[WebDiva D] ARCHIVE CLASSIC PERMANENTLY ADDED TO CARTOON NAVDate:Mon Jun 26 10:38:19 2000
Gentle people, I just discovered the "Archive Classic" link in the cartoon archive.  I don't know whether this is a recent addition or whether I just haven't noticed it until now...but thank you nevertheless!!   I'm not much of a fan of message boards like this and much prefer not seeing all those comments when I browse the strips, esp. in the Archive.
Peace, jim

Well, Jim, you are not alone. Much as we'd like everyone to participate in the comment system, not everyone has the bandwidth or inclination. Archive Classic has been permanently added to the cartoon nav bar to make it easier for folks like yourself to get your UF hit without the frills.

[Yohimbe] HOW TO LEARN LINUX, ACTUAL LINUX.Date:Mon Jun 26 10:14:24 2000
I just got this in the mail. The community knows more about how to learn linux today. I did it the hard way. I used (Sob) MCC and Slackware 1.1, when men were men, and distributions were cryptic, crude, and a beyatch to install.

<Yorkshire accent>When I were a young proto-linux-geek, ye had to install it nearly completely yourself. And add the network setup lines yerself. And compile your own kernel, from scratch. Distributions today, they coddle ye like yer muther was holding ye in her very arms. Luxury!</Yorkshire accent>

Hi,

I am an ex-Mac person trying to make a living in the MicroSmut world, and just getting fed up with it all. I know Mac, DOS, Windows and all that other crap inside-and-out (I even got MCSE training at the obscene price of $11,000Cdn, to "complement" my DeVry diploma).

I AM SICK OF IT

Where can I get 1 (one) good book that will help a semi-self-taught geek get into the Linux world? I have already installed and run Linux several times (old Slackware, Red hat, Mandrake 6 and 7), but I want to really understand it, not just click a few buttons here and there.

So, What do y'all think?
