DISCOUNTS FOR STUDENTS AT LINUX WORLD EXPO
00:01 PST 30 JAN 1999
This in from Caren Wagner at Linux World Expo: Some of the best technology innovations are developed by young, inquisitive minds -- students. Unfortunately, these innovators of tomorrow are often today's "poor, starving" college students. IDG can't help them there, but they can help them learn more and spend less cash. As part of the first Linux World Conference & Expo, IDG will offer all students an opportunity to explore, inquire and create, and a 25% discount on the conference program, to attend the upcoming show taking place March 1 – 4, 1999 in San Jose, CA.

To learn more about topics like GNOME, Beowulf and Perl, just to name a few, students can register for the SuperPass, which includes 2 days of sessions, 2 half-day tutorials, keynotes and exhibits, The Conference Package, which includes one or two day conferences (1 hour each), The Half-Day Tutorial Package, which includes one, two or three half-day tutorials (3 hours each) and The Full Day Tutorial Package. The Exhibits Only Pass is FREE, along with a T-shirt, for students who register on the Web by January 25th. (this may have been extended - Illiad)

Registering now for the conference enables students to receive advance information on new products and services, parties, events and awards. With over 40 conference sessions and 13 tutorials to choose from, LinuxWorld Conference & Expo offers students the most comprehensive showcase of applications and technologies using Linux. The show will highlight exhibitors and users who will provide the most up-to-date technological information about the industry.

Students interested in attending LinuxWorld Conference & Expo are entitled to a 25% discount on the conference program when they register ON-SITE at the show.

For additional information about the conference, visit the shows Web site at www.linuxworldexpo.com.

VIRTUAL REAL ESTATE
00:03 PST 29 JAN 1999
I've been asked by dozens of people to do a link exchange; a User Friendly link on their home page for one of the "character buttons" on the UF home page. I'm sorry to say that I simply can not accommodate everyone on this. The sites featured on the front page earned their buttons by more than just doing a link exchange (which, by the way, is just a gesture we do to cement the relationship) with UF; they've contributed to the geek community somehow, and grabbed my attention too. This isn't to say that there aren't dozens of sites out there that deserve a link on UF's top page, but I have a very limited amount of space to devote to it. I'm not saying you shouldn't write me and prod me for a button, but don't be surprised if a) it takes me several weeks to get back to you, or b) I say sorry, can't do it. Thanks for understanding!

COOL COMPANIES
00:01 PST 29 JAN 1999
And the votes are in. Thus far, the most often mentioned companies are (in no particular order) Red Hat, VA Research, Sony, Coke and Be. Neat choices everyone. I'm still interested in any others you have in mind, and there have been a couple that people have mentioned that didn't make the top five but I'm still going to investigate. Anyway, write me if you have a company you'd like to see buddy up with us.

SO WHO DO *YOU* THINK IS COOL?
00:03 PST 28 JAN 1999
I'm in the process of looking for a sponsor to do some co-branding with, and dozens of possibilities reared their heads. Thing is, I'm having a hard time narrowing the list down. What I'd really appreciate is your opinion on who you think would be the coolest company to approach about a new sponsorship. What's more, if you happen to work for one of these companies, and know who I should talk to, that'd help as well. ;-) Anyway, please write me and let me know what you think.

ADD YOUR VOICE TO THE LYRIC
00:01 PST 28 JAN 1999
Remember when the International Lyric Server got nailed? It's time to let them know we care and offer our support. Head on over and fill out the petition to bring the Lyric Server back. I thought that when a few other sites ran the link they wouldn't need any help but I've been told that the more weight we bring to bear as a community the better. Let's rock!

DUST PUPPY HATS
00:17 PST 27 JAN 1999
They are indeed coming! The art is done and we're just sourcing for the best deal. As the precedent has been set to produce the highest quality items for a few more dollars with the t-shirts, you can expect the same level of workmanship on the hats. No silk screening here, just embroidery. Again, more details as they become available.

LINUX WORLD EXPO
00:15 PST 27 JAN 1999
Just a quick announcement (to be followed by more details soon) that I'll be attending Linux World Expo thanks to the great folks over at VA Research! I'll be at their booth to meet and greet folks for a few hours on one of the days. The rest of the time I'll just be soaking all that cool Linux knowledge in. ;-) Stay tuned for more info, coming soon.

REQUIEM
00:08 PST 26 JAN 1999
I was going to write a piece on Australia Day (which is today) and help all of the UFies Down Under celebrate, when I heard that Dramoth, the kind Aussie chap who runs the UFie Webring for us had just yesterday suffered the death of his eighteen month-old cousin. I want Dramoth and his family to know that we're thinking of him and his loss. I think every geek realizes that no matter how spiffy or cool a computer or bit of software or whatever is, it's the people behind it that count. We'll never know what beauty his cousin could have brought to this world. Rest in peace.

NO SUCH AGENCY
00:06 PST 26 JAN 1999
I got a very nice letter a few days ago from a very nice Staff Sergeant who works for the NSA. He said he really liked the NSA references and the Furby stuff. He just wanted to set the record straight: the NSA doesn't go after terrorists, just the people who use codes they can't break. Unh huh. :-)

YEAH, I'M GAME
00:03 PST 26 JAN 1999
Now this is cool. I was contacted by more than a few people on this issue. It seems my review of Half-Life was met with some favour, because I've been asked to review more and more games. I'm going to try and get in touch with a few of the larger publishers to see if I can get a steady stream of products to review; as much as I love games, I really can't afford to buy them all just to review them. Hang tough...I have a new review pending with Tricia, your Editor of All Things Geek. If you want her to cut that loose, it'd help if you contributed something to the Geekstuff section.

GOING POSTAL
00:02 PST 26 JAN 1999
Okay, this is becoming a FAQ, so I'll answer it here and update the FAQ shortly. I've had numerous requests for a daily subscription mailer that e-mails the latest cartoon to people who want it. For a number of reasons I can't do this at the moment. A few months from now iy may come to pass. I'll keep you all posted.

IN NOMINE TRICIA
00:08 PST 25 JAN 1999
Thanks to the continuing efforts of the Editor of All Things Geek, Tricia has updated the Geekstuff section yet again with another book review and the first entry in the Brainstorms archive, the latter submitted by Paul the Distinct Australian, and the former penned by Charles-A. Rovira. Got a favourite book or game or bit of software you'd like to tell the world about? Tell Tricia, she'll at least listen. ;-)

PLEASE SIR, CAN I HAVE ANOTHER?
00:06 PST 25 JAN 1999
The effervescent tomato and Userfriendly.org Chief of Staff Arcterex is attempting to build a machine for ufies.org, the fan site he has painstakingly nurtured over the last few months. He has a Bits Page up listing the stuff he needs to put his baby together. If you can help, please write him and let him know. He'll be most grateful. And y'all don't want to see him pout.

AND THE FAMILY GROWS
00:03 PST 25 JAN 1999
I'm happy to say that we have three more volunteers joining Userfriendly.org; Josh, an HTML wielder and perl hacker who has been chained to the News and Iambe archives; Ciannait, soon to be your friendly neighbourhood Linkbrarian, and Belgand, another webbie working alongside Ritalin-Boy. Welcome aboard folks. Step right up and get yer ball'n'chain. :-D

THE DUDE IN THAT PICTURE
00:01 PST 25 JAN 1999
I've been asked several times about the chap in the picture in the January 22 cartoon. A few people guessed right: it's Steve Jobs of Apple fame.
