BATCH FILE #48Date:Sun Nov 7 22:57:05 1999
It seems there's a new UFie in our midst. From codo-1: On 11/2/99 a new UFie was brought into this world. My son, Chase Allen Congdon was born at 1:29pm on Tuesday, weighing in at 9lbs 3ozs and 22 inches long (Yes...DO feel sorry for my wife...The poor thing is about split in half, but she was a trooper through the whole thing!) Congrats to the Congdons, and especially to the missus for not killing her husband for putting her through that. :) Sean McCarthy (among many others who have written in over the last while) wrote in with potential evidence that the Dust Puppy used to hang out at MIT in 1989. Things that make you go "hmmmm..." Finally, remember the Hunger Site? James Johnson wrote in with a very helpful idea:

 wget -np -m http://www.thehungersite.com/cgi-bin/donate.pl >/dev/null

Simple. Cronable. (-m (mirror) probably isn't necessary)

WORLD HUNGER SITE: WORTHY OF TRAFFIC AND ATTENTIONDate:Fri Nov 5 00:16:53 1999
This has appeared here before but I think it should be revisited periodically. Several people in the last week or so have written in about it, so I figured now was a good time to direct some attention this way.

Go to the Hunger Site at the UN. All you do is click a button and somewhere in the world some hungry person gets a meal to eat, at no cost to you. The food is paid for by corporate sponsors (who gain advertising in the process because you see their logo). All you do is go to the site and click. But you're only allowed ONE click PER DAY. So spread the word to others. Visit the site -- when you start each day -- and pass the word!

UFIES IN THE UNITED KINGDOMDate:Fri Nov 5 00:14:50 1999
Infinitas sent this in as a followup:

I've had about 28 responses so far. I've made a list and a web page for information.

The latest details are (and will be) available at http://www.firedrake.org/seank/ufie.html as of now.

Great stuff. Thanks Infinitas!

ABOUT COMDEX AND THE BAZAARDate:Wed Nov 3 20:08:27 1999
I'm posting this to answer a mittful of mail I've been getting on the upcoming Comdex in Las Vegas this month: No, I won't be able to make it down and UF won't have a presence there for a number of reasons, the foremost being that I'm literally wading hip-deep in things to do that need my attention. It does appear UF will make an appearance at The Bazaar in New York City in December, details of which will be forthcoming here in the next little while. Phew. :)

ATLANTA LINUX SHOWCASE: FROM THE EYES OF THE WONDERGEEKSDate:Wed Nov 3 18:55:17 1999
Starlady sent in the URL to a site that details the events at the Atlanta Linux Showcase. Words by Brian Richardson; the whole thing is pretty funny, you might want to take the time to read it. Kudos to the wondergeeks, they did a great job!

LAS VEGAS COMDEX GATHERINGDate:Wed Nov 3 11:55:42 1999
I understand that there'll be quite a few members of the community heading over to Comdex in Las Vegas. Mike wrote in asking to see if folks wouldn't mind meeting up and killing some time together in the "seedy, neon playground that is Las Vegas." If I had the time, I'd be there. ;) Anyone who's going, maybe you should drop Mike a note and let him know.

On a side note, it's abundantly clear we're going to have to set up a worldwide database for UFies to get in touch with each other and to centralize information on gatherings. Another item added to the to-do list. :)

RETRO GAMING TOURNAMENTDate:Wed Nov 3 11:53:01 1999
This in from krystal

Your mention of the UFBBS TradeWars tourney reminded me that I'd forgotten to send you a note letting you know that we here at /dev/null are hosting a retro compter gaming tournament as well: /dev/null/nethack 1999! This tourney is also running basically for the month of November and we will be hosting a party for SF Bay Area players at the end. /dev/null/nethack can he found on the net at http://www.devnull.net/nethack.

/dev/null network is an unincorporated teach-yourself-geeking network in Oakland, California. The tournament is being sponsored by CLIQ Services Cooperative, a local coop consulting company of which most /dev/null members are also members.

Mmmmm, Nethack. I also remember Nethack Lite: Plays great, less killing.

THE UFIE CALLS CONTINUEDate:Mon Nov 1 21:53:45 1999
This time the call is from Australia, by Tamara Phillips:

I've been seeing news items alot talking about UFie gatherings in the US and UK... So, basically I was wondering if there are any Aussie UFies out there who are interested in organising a gather in the cities around Australia.. Perth, Sydney, Melbourne etc. I'm sure there are plenty of us...

So drop the lady a line, mates!
