COMMUNITY-GENERATED UF SOUNDS?Date:Sun Jan 9 23:04:18 2000
This in from James West

We have a problem......a big one.

See, there's certain people in the world who like to make themes based off of popular internet comic strips (sometimes referred to as 'crack heads' or 'people with too much time on their hands'). I, sadly, am one of these people who feel the overwhelming need becoming of an unpopular computer geek that wants to have others enjoy his brilliant art on their desktop and hail him as a demi-god and worship little kawaii statues of him and ...*cough* well, you get the idea.

Thing is, there are no good full-color, full-screen pics of the guys at Columbia and secondly, no official sounds (what makes a good theme? Tacky sounds, that's what!) Now, I'm sure full-color pics aren't that hard, but sounds..........it -is- a comic strip after all correct? Correct, that means that somebody has to fake it.......

Well, what do you suggest? I'd shy away from giving voices to characters, kinda ruins the image in your head, like seeing Garfield's Christmas when you're little, never hearing that voice before. But heck, a few 'poings' of snurf darts hitting a Microsoft distribution truck would be cool. In fact, it'd be fun as hell.

So, if you could be so kind, what about a SOS of sorts to the artistic community that makes cool .wav files? It'd be more than appreciated!

Here's the deal I'll offer. Get in touch with James if you can help him with a mittful of sounds, and I promise to provide larger drawings of all of the characters. And no, I won't be drawing any nude Mirandas. :)

[Kethryvis] LWE VOLUNTEERS CONFIRMED!Date:Sun Jan 9 12:23:36 2000
Wow!! Thanks to *everyone* who emailed me volunteering to work at Linux World Expo in New York City. I've chosen my UFies and you've been emailed with some prelim information. If you're not working this LWE, don't fret! We'll be doing lots of conventions and shows this year and we'll most likely be calling for volunteers for all of them.

And if you're going to LWE this Feb... drop by the UF booth and say hello!

USER FRIENDLY AT COMDEX CANADA WEST 2000?Date:Fri Jan 7 18:06:33 2000
If I don't answer this publicly I'll continue to get a steady flow of e-mail asking me this question: Q:Will User Friendly have a booth at Comdex in Vancouver this month? A:No, for a number of reasons, the foremost being that we just don't have the time or resources at this point to have a presence there. The next big show that we'll be at is Linux World Expo in New York City in the first week of February.

[WebDiva D] IAMBE Link RestoredDate:Wed Jan 5 08:59:36 2000
This is what happens when the Diva works too many long hours into the night. Apologies to the many folks who pointed out that Iambe's link was removed in the navigation restructure. She back, big as life and twice as bold.

A UFIE SOAPBOX ON THE YEAR 2000Date:Wed Jan 5 00:04:29 2000
Jim Knoble sent this in:

Due to the fact that i failed to drink enough champagne or irish cream on Friday night, i got a compulsion to write down some reflections on the transition into the new year/century/millennium. And lo, i seem to have written the sort of thing that other UFies would find interesting.

I'm sure Jim would appreciate feedback on his column. Now he's gone and done it. ;)

[Kethryvis] UF Community Section up and runningDate:Tue Jan 4 22:34:55 2000
It is with a lot of pride that I announce the unveiling of the newest UF section, Community.

In case you haven't heard, I've been brought on board to work alongside WebDiva and Illiad to help coordinate all the nifty things that our community does. Stuff like conventions (have you emailed me if you're going to LWE?), helping UFies find other UFies in their area, setting up UFie meets, and a bunch of other things!

So head over to Community and check out what we have! Expect a lot of new things in the coming months, and feel free to email me with any suggestions you might have!

ON THE HORIZONDate:Mon Jan 3 23:47:29 2000
Things may have been a little quiet on the news front lately, but that's because we're hard at work behind the site building new features and developing new content for you. Real Soon Now(tm) you'll be seeing some substantial changes to the site, although it won't be anything rude like frames or huge graphics or other contrivances that are likely to get you knotted up. The changes will allow the individual reader( that's you) to involve himself more in UF and all of the nifty people in the community. Expect these changes to make themselves visible sometime late this month.

The next trade show we'll be hitting is Linux World Expo in New York City, February 1st to 4th. Check out Kethryvis' call to arms in the news, posted a few days ago. We do indeed have something quite special planned for LWE, and we hope to meet as many of you as we can there.

Finally, there'll be some minor reorganization done to the site, but it won't be anything that'll cause major grief. Again, no frames, I promise. :)
