[Illiad] AFTER ACTION REPORT: COMDEX CHICAGODate:Sun Apr 23 02:25:00 2000
...or, more accurately, The Linux Business Expo. I'll preface my comments with a caveat that I pretty much only got to see the inside of the Press area and where I sat to conduct the book signing (at Linux Mall's community booth), but I think I got a general sense of the show from the people I met.

First and foremost, the people at the Expo were a pretty charged bunch, and interestingly enough they weren't mostly Linux fans. I got the sense that a substantial portion of the visitors were people who were initially attending Comdex wanting to find out more about "that there Linux thang." I did speak to a couple of people who came to get a book signed because their "teenaged daughter would've imploded" if they didn't...and they had taken the time to find out a little more about this upstart alternative to Windows. Cool.

Linux Mall, who were our kind hosts, took care of business smartly and made their presence known by two booths at the Expo, a big main booth and a smaller but functional community booth. I wasn't sure if the line-up for the book signing was as large as it was because they wanted my signature or what until one of the attendees said "I want my penguin doll, dammit."

I couldn't help but spot the huge, monolithic structure of the BSD Inc. booth while I was there. I confess that after someone mentioned it to me, I couldn't get "Thus Spake Zarathustra" out of my head every time I saw the big black column towering over the rest of the show. Then when "Dark Side" Dave asked me to do anything I kept answering "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that."

I did have one relaxing evening in Chicago which wound up as myself, Zonker from Linux Mall, and Adam, Bob and Mike from Linux Magazine went out for a late pizza. The funniest moment was when Bob MacMillan ordered a supremely huge-ass glass bottle of Budweiser that contained the equivalent of six beers in it, then a young lady at another table bought him another beer. I wish I had a camera.

Speaking of cameras, we'll have some of our own photos of the Expo up sometime this week.

That's all I can remember. And I didn't even drink any of Bob's beer.

[Illiad] Z.I.P. PHILLIP KATZDate:Sat Apr 22 23:40:03 2000
The author of PKZIP/PKUNZIP has passed away at the young age of 37. I'm not sure how many millions of times I used his ubiquitous compression software, but it really was a cornerstone of the software community. Details can be found here. Thanks to Brian Cook for the heads-up.

[WebDiva D] ...OF FRIDAYS AND EGGSDate:Fri Apr 21 09:48:55 2000
Not only is it Friday, today is Good Friday! Here in Canada that means a statutory holiday. So the UF office is empty today...at least it better be (ahem, Wildcard)! Our two US transplants, Wildcard and Kethyrvis, inform us that not everyone gets today off. For those of you still on the job today, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy egg hunting/chocolate hauling weekend.

[Yohimbe] THE HERALD OF A NEW ERADate:Thu Apr 20 09:09:48 2000
Silsor sends us this today:

From Dennis M. Ritchie's page (you *do* know who that is, right?):
Unix Ad is an ad from another epoch. It advertises some newfangled operating system called "UNIX", which supports up to 40 users, has over 100 user utilities and is already in use on over 2000 computer systems!

I wonder if he even dreamed unix would be this big. I hear there are copies of various linux magazines hanging around the labs.... :)

ILLIAD BOOK SIGNING AT LINUX BUSINESS EXPO TODAYDate:Wed Apr 19 09:21:26 2000

Today is the day! Illiad will be at the LinuxMall.com booth (L3276) from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. for the book signing and giveaway extravaganza! Apparently the much-valued buttons are stuck at Customs and will not be available for the signing. Be kind to my illustrious illustrator...it's not his fault that WebDiva sent you and the buttons aren't there. For the rest of the giveaway details that will be at the show check here.

[Kethryvis] UF SUN RUN WRAP UPDate:Tue Apr 18 13:29:54 2000
This in from Team UFie Captain mapleleaf:

Team UFies was 95th out of a hundred teams in the High-Tech division, in spite of a couple of DNF's (did not finish) courtesy of illness and/or injury (get well SOON, Ed!!). Special kudos to Cthuhlu and Cthuhluette, who spent half an hour at the 4.5K mark directing traffic around a medical team assisting a stricken runner.

Our website is presently a out-of-date mess because of an academic deadline. Later in the week I'll have details posted, to be followed by pictures when I get mine developed - or *ahem* Cthuhlu sends me his ;) - and be all ready to start taking names for next year ;)

I encourage ANY UFie who likes to run or walk a beautiful course to sign up for next year's Sun Run. I guarantee a good time and a great team to do the course with. See you next year!

UFIE COMMENT: STAR WARS EP1 ON DVDDate:Tue Apr 18 11:13:01 2000
From Phil Schwan:

Looks like the geeks win. Star Wars: Episode1 is being pushed into production for a DVD release. Gee...wonder if that was planned...

Let's see, how did that go? SW Trilogy box set...then Widescreen SW box set, then THX version box set, then Widescreen THX version box set, then Special Edition box set, then Widescreen SE box set...

Raise your hand if you own all these. Thought so. No wonder Lucas is worth $3 billion.

[Illiad] LEAVING ON A JET PLANEDate:Tue Apr 18 11:00:39 2000
Just a heads up folks to let you know that my e-mail access will be spotty at best while I'm on the road in Chicago. I'll be back on Friday (the 21st) so please be patient. If you need a faster response, please email info@userfriendly.org and someone will be able to handle your request.

It had better be sunny in Illinois, because the weather is absolutely gorgeous here in B.C... :)

[WebDiva D] EXTRAORDINARY GEEK FEATS WITH LINUXDate:Tue Apr 18 10:10:06 2000
Many of you have probably already seen this site, but the accomplishment bears a second look. La Bastille: a fourteen-story Tetris game run on a Linux server.

Eris tells us:
Recently, my fellow students up at Brown decided to build a massive Tetris board using lots and lots of on-sale Christmas lights and ingenuity. There is a full description at La Bastille: A Tech House Art Installation as well as pictures, quicktime movies, and a real-time camera. The sight got /.ed, which means that many UF readers have already accessed it..but a good deal of the house reads UF religiously and I'm sure it would be a huge thrill for them to see the site posted."

The Quicktime movies are great to watch. The live-cam has certain hours now, but they are stated on the site. And poking around the Tech House site was particularly insightful...Picklemania and Drop Night were most reminiscent of events this weekend past at Iambe's party.

I love the Tech House logo. UF geeks at Tech House/Brown rock!

[IAMBE] UFIE INTERROGATION (OH! THE HUMANITY!)Date:Tue Apr 18 09:08:07 2000
User Friendly's own Yohimbe and WebDiva recently perfected the sacred (avert your eyes when you say this out loud) Geek Scroll of Interrogation to be used on UFie love interests. This document now affords all in the community a fine example (and somewhat sadistic methodology) to follow when one needs to determine the state of schmuck of any existing or potential snoogums of friends, family or coworkers. Find out what questions need to be asked (in a manner that includes a large crowd, a spotlight and a suspicious absence of water) in today's I:I&I.

If for whatever reason a question that you think needs to be included was missed, drop Yohimbe a note.
