Our new nav pencil (showing it off here, look up...ooooh, ahhhh) officially replaces the blue lozenge bar on the Daily Static and will soon also replace the lozenge bar in the Comments server. The Archive Classic viewers will keep the older "fat pencils" nav that they are so fond of, though. Far be it from me to deprive the audience, nope, I know better from watching Illiad blunder around on April Fools Day...and say, isn't April Fools coming up? ;-P

Here's the reason why every single manual on unix type systems tells you to run as a regular user, not as root: Apparently there is now a cross platform, windows and linux virus out there, dubbed the W32.Winux virus. It has the ability to infect Linux ELF binaries, and spread. But since no one out there in their right mind runs unknown executables as root on a unix machine, there is no chance that this ever will spread, because a regular user can't modify programs owned by root, right. | To cheer on the brave, insane people that are going to be participating on Team UFie for the Vancouver Sun Run (spearheaded by Captain Mapleleaf, and attended by our own Illiad, Yohimbe and WebDiva), we are proposing a meet on Saturday April 21st for supper. Anyone, runners and lazy people alike, are invited to come and hang out with the UF staff. We haven't set on a venue yet. The restaurant depends on the number of people who want to come. Please email me the number of seats you'd like reserved soon so that I may find a place to harbor the appropriate amount of geeks. :) More details will be posted soon!

...or something! This one has been in the works for a while, and yours truly has the honour of giving away the bride! James "Squiz" Gurney and Sarah "Sillz" Loveday are tying the knot in Seattle on the 7th of April. Congrats to both, and my advance apologies if I end up eating most of the wedding cake. :) (I'm thinking we need a section of the site dedicated to congratulatory events within the community. Hmm...)

This in from Johan Jonsson, in Lappland, Sweden: 2.5 years ago I started to ICQ with a girl I knew, we realized that both of us where UF freaks and liked computers and so on. This Autumn we will get married. It's not all because of you and UF but we did make a peer-peer connection directly we started to talk about UF. Details can be found here. Y'all have to be able to read Swedish though. Man, I'm gettin' all misty. :)

I've had more than a few letters appearing in my mailbox asking some similar questions about buying stock in UF. Yes, we have begun to trade. Yes, you can buy stock. The trading symbol is UFM on the Canadian Venture Exchange also known as the CDNX. No, this is not a "pump-and-dump" stock, since all of the principal shareholders (myself and the finance folks we partnered with included) are subject to a restriction which releases only a little stock every six months over a three-year period. We're in this for the long haul, and we'd prefer to have thousands of smaller shareholders instead of just several large institutional ones.
