[Kethryvis] COMMUNITY NEWS, BOTH SAD AND GOODDate:Thu Feb 8 21:47:40 2001
I've been a bit behind of late... so I've got good news and bad news.

First, the Happy Good News.

Over Christmas, we had two UFies announce engagements!! #userfriendly regulars lisha and sad|st announced their engagement to their families over Christmas (and I'm up to my neck in wedding stuff for them, oy!) and UFie Mailing List Admin Godmoma announced her engagement as well to a striking gentleman she introduced us all to at LWE in San Jose this last August (whose name/nick escapes me.. sorry mom!!). Congrats to all of you!

And now for the sad news.

I just found out a few hours ago that #userfriendly regulars Ardaniel and Bugged were in a car accident tonight. Details are few at the moment, since the hospital is a no-cel zone, but Bugged is fine and Ardie is undergoing tests. Ardie and Bugged are good friends of lots of us, they're responsible for the SF-Bay UFies website, and have both helped us beta test the commenting system here at UF... and we wish Ardie lots of speed in recovering. If you know Ardie and Bugged, I'm helping with a collection for flowers to be delivered by me this week-ish. If you want to contribute, please email me and I'll give you the information. Note: Yes I'm using PayPal, it was the quickest and easiest way I could think of to do this kinda thing. We'll share news as we get it, and quick recovery Ardie!!!

[WebDiva D] LINUXTAG 2001 - WHERE .COM MEETS .ORGDate:Thu Feb 8 15:44:18 2001
Our friends in Germany have advised us that the next LinuxTag is taking place between July 5th-8th, 2001 in Stuttgart, Germany.

The largest show on Linux and Free Software in Europe is somewhat different to other shows, since it is, in itself, an OpenSource project which started 6 years ago as a small LUG meeting. Note: the LUG meeting was originally 70 people.

LinuxTag is now looking for talks or presentations. The call-for-papers http://www.linuxtag.org/2001/deutsch/showitem.php3?item=90&lang=en is out and the deadline for abstracts runs out on February 8th. If you want to take part, just go to the submissions page http://www.linuxtag.org/cfp/?lang=en.

More on LinuxTag as we get details...

[Kickstart] HOW DO YOU CHANGE MY ICON???Date:Wed Feb 7 11:43:34 2001
Every few days we get a question (mostly by Internet Explorer users) about how we manage to change their icon to a little Dust Puppy...here's how. In the root directory of our webserver we placed a file called 'favicon.ico'. Internet Explorer looks for this when it calls up a website and changes your address bar icon temporarily to it. It's kinda cool, but doesn't work with all browsers.

However, this is just an ordinary icon file, and you can download it here and use it as an icon for other programs.

Special thanks to nikdahl for the icon creation!

I just wanted to send a HUGE thanks out to the UFie volunteers who helped staff our booth: #userfriendly regulars Thyla and fpod, and UFies Ward and Dave were a big help to myself and WebDiva giving us a chance to get away from the booth a bit for lunch, errands, etc. Thanks a million to you all!

[Illiad] THE RECORD LABELS WANT HIM SIGNEDDate:Mon Feb 5 12:14:38 2001
Well, maybe not. But they should. UFie musicphile GordonF has added yet another song from the DP/Erwin series to his yeoman efforts; Sunday's tune can be heard here in all it's glory. While you're there, check out the rest of his work, including his rendition of Greg doing the disco thing.

[Illiad] WEB MAIL FOR UFIESDate:Mon Feb 5 12:10:11 2001
Inimitable UFie Steve Abraham has gone and done a terrific thing for the community and has set up UFie.org (not to be confused with Arcterex's fine establishment UFies.org) which offers a web-based e-mail system for all of us. Head on over and grab your fave handle before some knob goes and nicks it from under you! Many kudos to Steve for his hard work!

[Illiad] BACK FROM THE BIG APPLEDate:Mon Feb 5 00:15:31 2001
And quite a trip it was. New York is always interesting. I'm not a big city boy but I can appreciate what NYC has to offer.

My take on Linux World Expo NYC 2001 is pretty clear-cut. There wasn't as much sense of community this time around, but there were some fine efforts by the OSDN/Slashdot folks and the dot org pavilion was actually handled well this time as its placement was far more visible than it was in previous years. And of course we had our usual UF meet and met some terrific people who helped us out and who participated in our treasure hunt.

Some people might think that a drop in community feel is a bad thing, but I see it another way. LWE has always been a business show for the open source industry segment, and while there wasn't as much grassroots presence as in other shows, the solid business presence bodes well for the commerce that surrounds Linux, BSD and related efforts.

On a down note, I'm sad to say that there was a thief at the show. I had my laptop case stolen, and in it were my Sony Vaio, cel phone charger, Palm V, my passport and my ticket home. Stolen right from the UF booth, just minutes before I had to leave for the airport. I have no idea who did it, but it's the second such incident for us -- at LWE in San Jose last year we had our digital camera stolen from the UF booth, and it's not like we just leave things lying around. These were expensive lessons, so please learn from our mistakes and keep a tight hold on all of your belongings when you're at a show. I have faith that karma will come around and bite the thief squarely on the butt for this.

One show that I got to see the last time I was in NYC but forgot to mention was the categorically amazing It Ain't Nothin' But The Blues, an ensemble performance that describes through song the story of the history of the Blues. Any of the six performers I saw could be top-billed leading players for any show in town, as far as I was concerned. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend it.

And that's it for this time around. I'll have info about the next show we'll be attending in a few weeks.
