| ARCTEREX FEELS RELIEF | Date:Sun Sep 19 22:56:17 1999 |
So Arcterex goes to Redmond, and what's the first thing he does when he gets to the The Place? Sheesh. Y'all are marked by the MS Black Ops team now, dude. :)

| COLD FROM THE NINTH RING OF HELL | Date:Sun Sep 19 22:52:57 1999 |
Anyone who's been desperately trying to get a hold of me these last few days have probably met with no luck, and this is apart from being swamped with mail. I have a cold the likes of which has not been seen since the Fire of London, and I really am not in much condition to converse. So please excuse the silence. I'll be better in a few days -- either that or my lungs will have found a new home somewhere on my ceiling.

| USER FRIENDLY IN WIRED MAGAZINE | Date:Sun Sep 19 22:50:37 1999 |
For those of you who don't get Wired or who missed the September issue, you can see the spiff little column they featured on User Friendly in their Street Cred section. Thanks go to Josh Lucas for writing the piece.

| GEEK POPULATION PLUS ONE | Date:Sat Sep 18 12:02:06 1999 |
Due to the flood of email, not to mention a half-dozen other sorry-ass excuses, I neglected to mention that #userfriendly IRC channel regular n9volt had a bouncing 8lb 14 oz baby girl named Elizabeth Anne Blum last Wednesday! Congratulations to him and Mrs. n9volt! Looks like we have another Geek-to-be; that just warms my heart. If you have the inclination, please drop him and the missus a line. That was some seriously hard work they (she) did there. :) Update: Check out the photos that n9volt took! Note that this is not a Lynx friendly page.

| HURRICANE FLOYD HAS NOTHING ON THIS TORRENT | Date:Fri Sep 17 22:27:47 1999 |
Just so's you all know, I behind on my email by over 400 pieces, so it'll be a while before I get back to anyone who wrote in with a question. To help matters, please check the FAQ for an answer first -- I get a lot of mail from people asking questions that are already answered there. Also, read the Contacts Page carefully before just up and sending mail to illiad@. I often have to forward letters to the appropriate people. Thanks folks!

| BOOK SIGNING DATES AT ATLANTA LINUX SHOWCASE | Date:Thu Sep 16 23:42:32 1999 |
I'll be at ALS to do a book signing on Friday, the 15th of October. I may also be there in the evening on the 14th, but I can't guarantee. As to times, I still have to work that out. There'll be a sign or information regarding the hours I'll be there to scribble ink at the User Friendly booth. And to answer a few letters in one fell swoop, no, there is no charge for the signing. I mean, it's just ink. (Do other people actually charge fans for autographs?!!)

| THE LITTLE GUY STRIKES AGAIN | Date:Thu Sep 16 23:38:07 1999 |
Butterfly Girl (who has a web page at http://coyote.accessnv.com/leptir90/ has become crafty herself and created her own Dust Puppy model. I love it! There's something about things that are round and plush. Like Arcterex for example. :)

| PLUSH PLUSH BABY! | Date:Thu Sep 16 23:35:59 1999 |
I have sitting in front of me the absolutely cutest plush Dust Puppy doll I have seen yet. It's the prototype, and once I finish the approval process it'll go into production. He's about 6" tall, is plush all over and has a priceless expression on his face. I'll keep everyone advised as to when the little guy is available. Quality is as always very high and the price will be reasonable.

| YE GODS, I WAS BEING DENSE | Date:Thu Sep 16 10:51:22 1999 |
| ...or not paying attention or something. The previous news item sent in by Saotome was indeed an awfully nice one, but I evidently didn't read it carefully enough -- it was pointed out to me that the item is addressing everyone, including UF readers who aren't potential subscribers to the Republic. For obvious reasons, unless you actually do live in an area served by the paper, you shouldn't be asking to have UF added to their comics page. That's what happens when I post news items on little sleep. And I thought it might bring out the creative edge in me. Sigh. Thanks to everyone who wrote in!

| GET THE DUST PUPPY INTO THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC | Date:Wed Sep 15 22:05:53 1999 |
| Saotome Ranma sent in a really nice news item as a plea for support to get User Friendly into Arizona's state newspaper: The Arizona Republic Newspaper has a slot open on its comics page. The Republic serves over 2 million readers across the state of Arizona. You can help persuade the Republic to carry UserFriendly by doing the following: (post this somewhere so others can do the same!) Send email to comics@pni.com with a subject line "Attn: Bill Hill" List your age, gender, and hometown (use a hometown of either "Phoenix", "Glendale", "Mesa", "Tempe", "Scottsdale", "Chandler", "Gilbert", or "Peoria".) Tell them that the only strip you want to see added is "User Friendly" and to contact the author, Illiad, at illiad@userfriendly.org The more people that send in these things, the better! Warning: using email addresses that end in ".edu" will probably be easily guessed as from a person NOT in the Phoenix area. ^_^ This may be the break we've all been looking for! Get UF in a major newspaper!

| [IAMBE]You Are Like A Hurricane.... | Date:Wed Sep 15 10:55:54 1999 |
| Thanks Floridian UFies for writing in and updating us as Hurricane Factor Five Floyd gives the US East Coast one heck of a, um, yeah, Blow Job. Now it seems that Floyd is making his way up the coast and attacking the Carolinas. Using the User Friendly complex network of communications tools, I was able to get in touch with Floyd's publicist in order to attempt to secure andinterview with Senior Storm himself. The publicist, one burn out meteorologist come marketeer, named Hans McElroy (who was publicist for Fran as well) informed me that as Floyd is rather occupied at the current time being an "Act Of God/Nature" I would have to settle simply for an email interview. I was daunted to note that Floyd has a Hotmail account. By another, and in my opinion equally awesome Act Of God/Nature - my email to the storm did infact reach him through Hotmail, and in the same stellar context, a reply, also through this same service was received. [Iambe]Floyd, just what is your intent with the US East Coast? [Floyd] It's all about powerÖonce I got out of my tropical depression, I felt alive. Just a little stretching of my legs as it were. I don't intend to harm anyone. [Iambe] Are you on a destructive path in a macho retaliation to being named Floyd? [Floyd]No, it is really a need to just express myself, some tell me I am a blowhard, but I am a really nice guy. I have been told I have a lovely eye. [Iambe]Why so much time spent on the East Coast? [Floyd]I have heard stories about how at least the Southern edge of the East Coast is where people are warm and friendly, although all I see are boarded up homes with no one in them. All I can say is that with this kind of treatment, tropical depressions are going to be even more depressed. And do not get me started with the constant fly throughs - planes flying through me every three minutes with probes and other things. I have never felt so violated. And to the US Weather Service - don't even act like that is NOT your satellite staring at me while I am undressed. UFies in the Carolinas, please write to let me know you are OK. Despite levity in an "interview" with Floyd, we are very worried about you, and you have our best wishes.

| A PRAGMATIC VIEW OF THE WINDOWS EVIL | Date:Mon Sep 13 16:34:32 1999 |
There's an article up on IntellectualCapital.Com that explains why we should turf Windows. Yes, yes, we've all heard the same old tired ideological arguments, but this one is about practicality -- or so the author claims. I see his point, but the talkback on the column has raised a bunch of issues that clearly make the whole damn thing a lot more complicated. Give it a read. Thanks to John Alexander for pointing me at the story.

| [IAMBE] Got Talent? I Got Cash! | Date:Mon Sep 13 15:28:21 1999 |
| I am looking for a few of the good on the web! The company I am currently working for ( a young, hip web development firm ) is hiring contract web designers (HTML/DHTML by hand only - none of this Front Page garbage), Flash Experts and folx who are the artistic genius type able to do graphic design and general original logo work. It does not matter whether you are a seasoned professional or full of untapped raw talent - I want to hear from you. Please email immediately your resume as well as URL's wherein I can check out work that you have done to Work With Iambe. Make certain to include your hourly rate. I encourage British Columbians as well as those fresh out of school to apply.
