[Yohimbe] COMMENT SYSTEMDate:Sun May 13 20:13:26 2001
By popular demand, several people have been asking about all the changes in the comment system. We're still fixing some bugs, but the main system is working pretty well. I hope you all get a chance to take a look. A users manual of sorts is needed, but here's the Readers Digest version:
  • Some HTML comments are now allowed. In light grey text at the bottom of the posting page is a list of allowed tags. No Images, no tables, but most text markup.
  • There are 3 main views.
    • "No Comments" is the familiar "classic" mode very familar to you all.
    • "Show Comments" is the familiar mode where the thread "leader" is shown in abbreviated form, and the replies are title only.
    • "Show Subject only" shows just the comment titles in the index page. Viewing a discussion thread of course shows you the comment text. Obviously this is quicker to load than "show comments".
  • Preferences are saved whether or not you sign in. We give you a tiny cookie, 3-4 characters long that encodes your view preferences.
  • A Weblog/Diary for all users. We're happy to make it easy for Ufies to carve out their own space on UF. Same html posting rules as comments. Only the diary owner can post top level comments, anyone can reply.
  • We've removed the "Publicly viewable email address" since we were getting webscraped all the time. If you really want your address on uf, put it on your diary page.
We welcome your comments about the new look.

[Yohimbe] PUBLIC BETA TEST OF NEW ARSDate:Fri May 11 14:11:30 2001
Its here folks. As of 14:17, we have a copy of the current comments database available with the new ars code on Our dev machine Robinson Please be nice to it. Its a bit underpowered.

New features to look for:

  • Waaay better threading and navigation.
  • Your own personal diary node suitable for a web log
  • Preferences even without an account. So you can get your own preferred view, without logging in .
  • Extra crunchy new code. And as a bonus to developers, this time a human can install it without me over your shoulder
  • Should be (touch wood) TONS faster.

  • [WebDiva D] GEEKFINDER SUCCESS PLUS HOLIDAY!Date:Thu May 10 17:49:04 2001
Sometimes these Geekfinder success stories come along and just make me shake my head. John S.' was one of them...all the horseshoes, none of the effort!

I read userfriendly, and saw the geekfinder thing. I left my job and decided to travel for a month. I figured I could always get serious about a job search when I got back, but just for kicks, I put my resume on Geekfinder, not expecting much from a minimal effort....(read full success story)
    John S.

Well, congrats to you John and thanks for sharing! If you have a Geekfinder Success Story, send it to us!

    [Yohimbe] NEW LOOK ROLLOUTDate:Thu May 10 12:45:52 2001
We've been busy little beavers... We've got a new look, and a whole bunch of new features being rolled out in the next couple of weeks. Please be patient with us while we implement them. We just might have some breakage.... Expect a nicely re-vamped discussion area, some new content features and more. We have tested it internally, but nothing compares to what you people will do to it on a Monday morning.

    [Illiad] PIECE O' CAKE DUST PUPPY STYLEDate:Mon May 7 11:25:18 2001

Proud newlyweds Rob and Jen Myers sent in this photo of their wedding cake. So spake Rob:

I don't know if you remember, but I wrote you several months ago for permission to use the Dust Puppy on the grooms cake, which you graciously granted. Well, the wedding was this past weekend. A picture of the cake is attached. Reactions ranged from "What is it, a sea urchin?" to "OHMYGOD, Dust Puppy!". OK, so not all of our friends and family are UFies :) Heck, I wasn't until I met my wife.

I'd suggest that you married very well indeed Rob. :) Congrats to both of you, and thanks for the photo!
