| | [Illiad] THE BATCH FILE | Date:Sun Oct 15 20:40:54 2000 |
| Atlanta, You Shine So Bright: Hats off to the fine folks who worked so hard to put the Annual Linux Showcase together. Once again it was a terrific show laced with all the things that make the Deep South so much fun to visit. My thanks to the volunteers who made life a little easier for the UF staff at the booth: Axiom and Gruuk, and a little later falconr with her magic button machine. I'll definitely miss Atlanta next year; ALS is moving to Oakland, CA in 2001. Real Soon Now: Keep your eyes open for an announcement very shortly regarding the re-opening of the UF Store. It's that close. The Audience Is Speaking: The overwhelming vote is for Sid to stay, although not as a core character. He'll be back over and over again until he either dies from old age or someone (Pitr?) kills him. Thy wish is my command, and all of that. Last But Not Least: A thousand thank-yous to every one of the UF fans who came by the booth and said hello. I am once again reminded where a huge concentration of some of the nicest people are.

| [Kethryvis] THE RETURN OF UPDATE FROM THE FLOOR : ALS | Date:Sat Oct 14 09:00:00 2000 |
| ALS is coming to a close today, and I'm actually rather sad! ALS has been a *great* show for us. The UFie meet last night went off WONDERFULLY! Somewhere between 35-40 UFies showed up for dinner at Mick's, then arcading, then to the Linux Journal party. My huge thanks go to #userfriendly regular falconr for her work in finding us a place to eat, and to the *great* folks at Mick's Restaraunt for putting up with 40 geeks! (Diva has nothing but raves about the fried green tomatoes. None for me thanks!) Today is rather quiet.. last minute shwag getting. Illiad will be at our booth for several hours this afternoon so today is the day to go see him. I also want to give a huge shout-out thanks to UFie DaveDude and his wife for addicting *all* of the UF Staff to Krispy Kreme doughnuts. These *are* my new crack. Wow. And thanks to the Mysterious Coke Elf who left 2 two-liters of Coke and several smaller bottles. I am on *such* a sugar high now! Thanks also go to the great organizers of ALS, of which I don't know all of them but a blanket thanks should do fairly well. Congrats to Chris, the show Director for doing one heck of a great show. We look forward to ALS next year! Back to the booth for me then its off on vacation... I'll see you all when I get back next week!

That's it, I'm on my way to Atlanta. I won't be back until Sunday so any e-mails will just get queued up. If you really need to get ahold of me or Diva or Keth, try info@userfriendly.org and someone will try to get a message to us. If you're going to ALS, hopefully I'll see you there, otherwise, see "all y'all" (the plural of "y'all" I've been told) next week!

And for all of you who didn't have the opportunity to attend Linux World Expo in NYC, you missed a fabulous Nerf fight conducted by some UFies. I recognize the two valiant warriors on the left, lisha and rynsey from the #userfriendly IRC channel. Caption for the photo: "Wait wait! I have a wedgie!"

| [Illiad] FROM THE BATCH FILE II | Date:Mon Oct 9 00:43:37 2000 |
| Does he stay or go? Sid Dabster, the latest addition to the UF cast of characters has, if nothing else, caused enough of a response that it bears examination. It seems that people want him to stay, mostly. I can promise that he'll be around, but not necessarily (and not necessarily not) as a core character. Guess we'll see how it goes, and I invite you to let me know what you'd like to see happen with him. And to head off the usual flood, yes, Cat Five and Matt will both be returning in short order. :) It's all about Character: In the past 8 weeks or so I've received at least two or three dozen emails about this, so I finally got off my duff and am posting it: MSLinux.org has some interesting quotes on the sidebar, one in particular from someone you know from this site, and it's NOT me or Arc or Iambe or WebDiva. :) Check the site out, it's actually quite amusing. The Long and Financing Road: No new news here, just that things are progressing one step at a time. As soon as something substantial occurs, you'll hear about it here. Public Service Announcement: This in from Ilan Rabinovitch about the upcoming LUGFest in Simi Valley, California. On October 28, 2000 the Simi Conejo Linux Users' Group will be hosting LUG Fest III in Simi Valley, California. A LUG Fest is an opportunity for Linux users to demonstrate Linux (or other Open Source operating systems), Linux applications, attend seminars, and BOF (Birds Of a Feather) sessions. Additionally, Linux vendors may participate and show off their wares. SCLUG is looking for persons willing to demonstrate their favorite application, and vendors willing to show off their latest and greatest Linux wares. If you have got amazing and awesome skills with a Linux application such as GIMP, Samba, or any other Linux application, we would love to have you volunteer for a seminar. If you are a vendor with a cool Linux product, we would love you to have a table. LUG Fest II was twice the size of the original LUG Fest. People came from Orange County, Santa Barbara, Santa Clarita, the South Bay area, and all points in between in California, and from areas outside California as well. Many Linux vendors donated items for give aways and raffles. Several vendors who came with their wares were Corel, eLinux.com, VMware, Loki Entertainment, and Magic Software. We need YOUR help to make number III even better! LUG Fest is put together by a local Linux Users' Group and the main focus of the event is Linux. However we do welcome participants and attendees from other open source/free OS communities.
