| | AOL SHENANIGINS REPORTED...AGAIN | Date:Sun Jan 2 20:38:56 2000 |
James Overbeck at Global Online Japan sent in this bit about AOL's postmasters being non-responsive to spam complaints. The official announcement is less useful than the more detailed announcement. Tsk. Think it's sheer volume, a conspiracy, or just apathy that's afflicted the postmasters over at AOL?

| So what are *you* doing Feb 1-4? If you're going to LWE2000 in New York City, we want you! We're looking for volunteers to work the User Friendly booth. You must be cheerful, willing to work for me (slave driver that I am) and WebDiva (and she IS a slave driver!!), and tout the gloriousness that is User Friendly. ATTENTION VERTICALLY CHALLENGED UFIES!! We need you for a super secret project for LWE. If you're 5'2" or under, please mail me with subject header "Short UFie." And if you're just planning on attending and want to work the booth please mail me and let me know! As time gets closer, I'll choose the booth workers and have more details for you.

| THE START OF THE (NEW MILLENNIUM - 1) | Date:Sat Jan 1 13:21:09 2000 |
| My thanks to everyone who sent in email wishing me and the gang at UF a great new year, and I return the same wishes to all of you. One more revolution around that oh-so average star of ours and we're still here, despite all of that tequila. In addition to the delightful deluge of 'Happy New Year' mail, I received a few sackfuls of mail about the first cartoon of the year. For those who aren't aware of it, the text actually does mean something, it's just been encrypted with a really simple and old substitution cypher called ROT13. If you'd like to see what the text means, head on over to this site which features ROT13 scripts under a wide variety of implementations. There's also a web-based ROT13 decoder available here. Kudos to the couple of hundred people who sent in e-mail with the text decyphered. Everyone got it right. :) For the record, the first unscrambled e-mail came from Stephen Zurcher, who beat out thirty-odd people who's mail got to me about a minute later. So, back to my e-mail. I have about fifty letters to decrypt. :o Once again, happy new year from all of us at User Friendly!

| WANT TO WORK FOR USER FRIENDLY? | Date:Wed Dec 29 17:46:10 1999 |
| This doesn't happen often, but I'm in a position where I need some help on the graphics/multimedia front. I'm looking for someone who has a background in graphic art, prepress, classical animation and illustration. If you have skills in multimedia (Flash, Director, etc.) it's a big plus. HTML is, of course, a no-brainer. Experience is far less of an issue than talent, so a portfolio that you can show me is a must. The tortured soul who gets this must be local to me, as you'll be working closely with myself and Webdiva on a daily basis. That means Vancouver, British Columbia, for those who don't know. You must have a love of the bizarre, enjoy eating junk food, have a quirky sense of humour and change your underwear regularly. Nobody cares what gender or race you are, although we admit a prejudice against Vogons. Compensation is commensurate with talent (we make sure you don't starve), you get to work with a bunch of loons, and you'll get to grow with one weird-ass company. Yes, this is a full-time, permanent position. Resumes, URLs, portfolios and suck-up letters can be sent to me at illiad@userfriendly.org. Okay, back to your regularly scheduled eggnogging.

| SECRET SANTA AFTER ACTION REPORT | Date:Tue Dec 28 01:21:09 1999 |
| This in from Godmoma: Judging from the mail I got, the Secret Santa Project was a success. It seems that there are some people who haven't yet received anything, and I know a few have emailed me saying sorry for being late getting stuff out. We had 102 participants, and next year I'll have some geek friend write me a script to deal with it all... one can only do so much copy and paste ;) Also, in case you were wondering, the person you sent a gift to is not the person that sent a gift to you. You people were all daisy-chained, rather than matched up in pairs - somehow it seemed more fun and random that way. Not a whole lot of people emailed me to tell me what they got, so if you forgot, please do so now :) Thanks all for participating, and I'm sure I'll be here next year :) -Mistress Claus, aka Godmoma
