[Illiad] YE FLIPPING GODS IT REALLY HAS BEEN THREE YEARSDate:Fri Nov 17 00:42:22 2000
It's been three years since I scratched out the very first User Friendly strip whilst sitting all by my lonesome in the offices of the ISP I used to work at. Two books, 1097 cartoon strips, a cramped drawing hand and much learning and humility later, here we are, November 17, 2000!

Once the great drugs wear off I'm sure I'll just wake up and shake my head over all of this. :)

Until then, see you at the party, or on the IRC channel!

(I'd also like to add that today is my pal Arcterex's birthday, he of ufies.org. Happy birthday, Arcterdude!)

[Illiad] UF STORE RE-OPENS AND THEN SOMEDate:Wed Nov 15 14:23:16 2000
After a great deal of work and effort, we finally have the UF store open again! Going to http://www.ufiemall.com (also reachable from "The UF Store" in the nav bar to the left) will take you to a section at TheLinuxStore which displays all of the fine bits of UFdom you can pick up for yourself or as gifts. We currently have the black Henley shirt (soon to be rotated out, get one now if you want one), the DP & Erwin golf shirt, the original white Dust Puppy t-shirt and the Evil Genius in Training t-shirt available. Pretty soon we'll also have the Geek Dating Flowchart poster, the Geek Rant poster, the stainless steel Pitr mug and the plush Dust Puppy dolls available.

We also took to heart what we learned from the survey we conducted a while ago and we have in the pipeline items like a Greg tech support t-shirt, a Miranda shirt for petite female UFies, a Dust Puppy embroidered hooded sweatshirt, boxer shorts (!!!), a ceramic mug with the entire gang on it, and a bunch of other spiffy items. These should be coming in the next couple of months.

You'll also notice that the store doesn't just have UF items available -- our partners over at TheLinuxStore are handling all of our merchandise, so when the Geekpoints system is finally kicked off our intention is for you to be able to redeem them for items and discounts throughout their lineup of products. More details on that when they become available. Either way, you can still shop for anything they carry while you're in there picking up your UF gear. [Be sure to check out the give-away that the folks at TheLinuxStore have organized specially for the opening of the UFieMall.]

My thanks to everyone who sent in suggestions and to the community at large for being so patient! It was a long haul. If you have more ideas for merchandise, by all means send them in to info@userfriendly.org.

[Kethryvis] THE HOURS ARE TICKING DOWN...Date:Wed Nov 15 13:44:50 2000
To the UF 3rd Anniversary party! Things are clicking into place for our big party here in Vancouver, and I bet they are for the other parties being held around the world.

Just a few things for those of you attending the party in Vancouver... first off, we've *way* hit our limit! Unfortunatly we cannot accept any more RSVP's for the party in Vancouver.. we hit our limit and went over. Wow! This means that if you RSVP'ed for the party, please do not bring anyone who has not RSVP'ed. The club has a limit of 200 and we are pushing that quite severly. (in other words, if your name isn't on our list, you won't be able to get in. Sorry guys..)

How do you get in on Friday night? First off, hit the WebCafe at 390 W Hastings in Vancouver. There will be a table at the door staffed by UFie folks. Give your name to one of them, they'll check you off the list, check your ID, give you a wristband (if you are of legal drinking age, which is 19 in British Columbia), and give you your welcome packet. Then come on in and party!

If you're not going to be joining us in Vancouver, then feel free to join us in IRC! We'll be hanging out in #userfriendly on Undernet all night so feel free to stop by and say hello!

More details in the next day or two... see you all on Friday!!

[Illiad] CHARITYLAN.ORG DEC 2 IN ST. LOUISDate:Tue Nov 14 00:23:10 2000
The big-hearted folks over at CharityLan.Org led by David Mestel are hosting another LAN party with all of the proceeds going to charity. From David:

My name is David Mestel. I represent CharityLan.Org. We host LAN Parties and donate the proceeds to charity. Last year, we raised over $700 to purchase laptops for victims of A.L.S.

The two laptops we purchased allowed individuals, that have lost the ability to speak or move due to the disease, to communicate with family and friends. This is the same disease that struck the illustrious Prof. Hawking and many others. We hope to help alliviate a bit of the mental dismay in helping those affilicted communicate.

This year, we hope to do better then last. We have accommodations this year for 120 people. We already have over 70 people lined up to attend, (last year we had 40) and are getting more. The event is scheduled for Dec 2nd. See the site for more details.

NB.The event is located in St. Louis, Missouri, and David asked that unless you plan on attending the event not to click through or the ISP that has agreed to host the site might choke. Be nice, everyone. :)

[Yohimbe] SCOOP! MERILUS FIRECARD ROCKS. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST.Date:Mon Nov 13 10:38:52 2000
So I got my hands on some pre-release specs for the new Merilus firecard.

The Merilus people have been some VERY busy little beavers. This is cool

First they have a very cool firewall product, with a great GUI, then they make this hardware linux based router that has best rack space requirement I've ever seen.... NONE.

It fits into a spare PCI slot, provides a full firewall, vpn, masquerading and all that stuff, boots off of disk on a chip, doubles as the ethernet card for the machine and has its own separate reset button. So the (possibly WinXX) machine can bluescreen as often as it wants and the router lives on through it all.

It has the very easy to use Merilus java based gui management software, runs on most OS's including Linux, WinXX right now, and Mac soon. They've gotten all tricky with its autoconfiguration, so it does a kind of network setup discovery that will use DHCP, but still work in a static network too. Very cool. And for extra cool factor, the Firecard Enterprise card uses the new Transmeta Crusoe chip.
