| USER FRIENDLY CARTOON SEARCH ENGINE | Date:Sun Aug 29 16:12:28 1999 |
This is actually very cool. Nick has slaved over this wee project for some time, coming up with a Most Excellent Cartoon Search Engine for User Friendly. Well done, Nick. I'm sure that people who are impressed with your efforts will be mailing you soon. ;)

| USER FRIENDLY BOOK? | Date:Fri Aug 27 19:28:53 1999 |
I've been getting this question a lot in email these days, so I'll answer it publicly again: Yes, there is a User Friendly book about to be published. The publishers are the fine folks at O'Reilly, purveyors of the classic "Different Kind of Animal" series among many others. The book is due out for October, in time for the Atlanta Linux Showcase which I'll be attending. And if you're at the show, I'll be very pleased to scrawl my pen across the inside cover. :)

| MOVIE REVIEW: MYSTERY MEN | Date:Fri Aug 27 18:24:15 1999 |
Don't worry, no spoilers! When I went into this movie I was expecting a campy script and some mediocre talent. It turns out that this is one FUN movie! My favourite characters are the Shoveler (he can hand out a buttkicking in spades) and Janeane Garofolo's charming Bowler. I've always liked Janeane's acting, but I was concerned about what this movie would do to my respect for her -- and she proved herself once again by showing that she knows how to have fun at the same time as remain a very good actress. The plot is simple -- to be expected in a superhero movie -- but loads of fun. The special effects are better than adequate. The directing wasn't spectacular but it was up to the task. The ending was a "hollywood special." Final verdict: worth watching, although if you'd rather watch it on video, you can do that too.

| Carl Kreider, the winner of the UF/ORA draw we did at Linux World Expo a couple of weeks ago, has finally come up with his choice of 25 books from O'Reilly. I thought it might be cool to show the rest of the UFie community what one UFie would select as his choices: Well...the choice was a tough one. Here is the list I just sent off to O'Reilly. | BOOK SIGNING AT ATLANTA LINUX SHOWCASE | Date:Thu Aug 26 12:29:00 1999 |
It looks pretty good -- the grand folks at O'Reilly are flying me down to the Atlanta Linux Showcase in October to do a book signing, which implies that the book will be out by the time the show kicks off. A book signing. Heh. That stuns me. :)

| MAIL EXPLOSION | Date:Thu Aug 26 12:14:40 1999 |
I'm not sure if it's because it's the end of summer or what but I've been getting around double my daily dose of mail. I am way behind on replying, so please bear with me. Between handling mail, developing the cartoon, cutting deals to stay alive and finalizing the book I'm completely swamped. In case you haven't checked it yet, please read the FAQ before sending in a question. Thanks gang.

| THE SHUGASHACK NEEDS A DESIGNER | Date:Tue Aug 24 16:37:00 1999 |
Anyone who gets in deep with the gaming community knows sCary's Shugashack. Well, sCary, being the obsequious fellow that he is, has come crawling on his hands and knees and begged me to find him a web site designer. Not just any designer, but a real crack design wizard. Yes, money is involved, and sCary even promises to send you photos of the left side of his bum after having it smacked by a waffle iron if you do a fantastic job. Think you have what it takes to curl sCary's toes? Head over to his site and let him know!

| WILL SMITH HAS NOTHING ON THIS | Date:Mon Aug 23 16:43:41 1999 |
A disturbing news item on ZDNet sent in by BJ Baye. Given the crap that's happening in the world today, I can't entirely blame the U.S. government for this level of paranoia, but on the same note I can't say it impresses me. Feel like discussing it? Head over to the Friendly Forum.

| LYRICS SERVER NEEDS COMMUNITY SUPPORT | Date:Mon Aug 23 16:37:38 1999 |
| Stephanie Dicks was the first of many people to send in this news item: After seeing that the International Lyrics Server is still not up and another great lyrics resource, lyricshq.com has been asked to 'cease and desist', we decided to help out one more time. This was the second largest lyrics site and a great place to blow some time. We grabbed an old tape archive of the people who signed the last petition and restored it so that we could notify you and ask for help one last time. We hope that you aren't upset about this email but we saw that Tom needs help over there and we hoped that everyone could forgive us for this intrusion. He was asked to bring the site down at the beginning of July and tried to contact their lawyers in order to reach some sort of agreement to get it back up. He has a meeting with them on Monday. We are hoping that this petition might give him some ammo for his side, so please come sign before then! We have setup the new petition at http://www.petitionworld.com/ Please come and sign it. We promise that you will never hear from us again and our promise still stands that we have not and will not sell your emails off to some spam company. If you are a webmaster, please take a second and put up a link to the petition on your site. It would help greatly.
