[Illiad] GONE TO SAN FRANDate:Sat Mar 18 15:49:34 2000
Just a heads up to folks in case you're trying to get ahold of me via email: I'll be in San Francisco until Wednesday, so I'll have little or no opportunity to handle my email. If it's something that doesn't require my direct attention, you can always try info@userfriendly.org. See y'all on Wednesday!

[WebDiva D] READY TO TELL THE WORLDDate:Fri Mar 17 09:07:46 2000
You might have noticed the Think dBASE banners on our site lately. The good folks over at dBASE Inc. recently shared this with us:

The Story of a Virtual David (ready to take on Goliath)

dBASE, which ruled the database market in the early days of the PC revolution, was eventually eclipsed by Microsoft and neglected by Inprise. A group of devoted dBASE users were determined not to let the best interactive database and RAD available, disappear. Having a penchant for the long hours and uncertainty of working for a small start-up, they purchased the rights to dBASE from Inprise last year.

Knowing how frustrating it is to use a program that crashes unexpectedly, they made bug-hunting their highest priority and zapped over 130 bugs. They also knew they were stewards of one of the best kept secrets in the industry - because dBASE is fast, productive and connects to just about anything, it's ideal for Web apps. Now, with the Visual dBASE 7.5 Web Wizards and Web classes, you can create a complete Web app without really even trying. They offer a unique dBASE Subscription with four quarterly releases. Visit their site for details.

[Illiad] SIGN IAMBE'S CYBERCASTDate:Wed Mar 15 22:55:59 2000
Our Garden Variety Goddess has indeed busted a wing, so in the tradition of geeks, I ask each of you to grab a piece of her cast and sign it in whatever you use as a graphics app. Once it's signed, please forward the square to Kethryvis with the subject header Iambe's Cast and we'll have them pieced together like a quilt for all to see! (It may even help Iambe heal faster...)

I received this message today, and had to share it with the rest of the UF Community:

> I just wanted to thank you for posting the URLs about the Call to
> Protect program. My husband and I are sending them 4 phones.
> I work for USWest and I've asked that the powers that be notify ALL
> employees about the program and ask them to help also. I figure that no

> Thanks again,

No, Randi, thank you

[Illiad] GEEKS HELPING THE MEEKDate:Mon Mar 13 14:18:55 2000
This in from Olliver J.:

There was a story on Good Morning America about the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the CTIA "Wireless Foundation" which is asking people to donate their old cell phones to their CALL TO PROTECT program. These phones are programmed with emergency numbers and carried by individuals who are are in danger allowing them to call for help if needed. We can make a difference by asking the company we work for to email the employees and asking them to donate their old working cell phones. With many people upgrading to smaller and digital phones, the old ones are stuck in a drawer at home. A law firm interviewed raised 50 phones in 1 day. I don't know if they only want handhelds or will take bag phones. You can get more information on the "CALL to PROTECT" program by emailing foundation@ctia.org

The Good MorningAmerica web page with the information is: http://abcnews.go.com/onair/GoodMorningAmerica/gma000313_calltoprotect.html The address to send phone in through GMA is: GMA's Call to Protect, Ansonia Station, P.O. Box 234071, New York, NY 10023

The CTIA "Wireless Foundation" web page is: http://63.74.120.38/wirelessfoundation/12give/donate.htm The address you can use to send phones in to them is: Call To Protect, c/o Brightpoint, Inc., 501 AirTech Parkway, Doors 23/24, Plainfield, IN 46168

Motorola is also helping with the program.

[Illiad] OF BOOKS AND BORDERSDate:Mon Mar 13 14:16:06 2000
There's a really kind review of the first UF book at Borders. Also, from what I understand, the second UF book (titled Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell: A User Friendly Guide to World Domination) is due out from O'Reilly sometime in April or May. More details as I get them.
