THE BOOK DEAL IS COVERED 00:01 PDT 27 JUN 1999 Official word: I sent off the cover for the first User Friendly book last week, so all is still on schedule for publishing in October. It was extra-cool to see it finished off with the O'Reilly logo! A few people have asked me to release a preview of the cover online, but I'm thinking maybe it'd be better just to surprise everyone this fall. ;) I can tell you this, however: the cover is four-colour, and the topic is analagous to an extremely famous artistic work that has been around for hundreds of years.

UPDATE ON CONTEST WINNERS 00:01 PDT 26 JUN 1999 Mea culpa. I promise to have the winners of the MyMovies and Tuckeroos contests posted here on the Static next week, as early as possible. Nothing really got in the way except for time constraints, so I'll make sure I have the hour or so to finalize all of the details regarding the winners. Thanks again to everyone who participated!

UF MAKES THE ROUNDS AT REDMOND 00:01 PDT 25 JUN 1999 David Kloba sent in this link to an article about Eric S. Raymond's speech at Microsoft's Redmond Campus. Interesting article. At the bottom of the article there's a paragraph about a specific User Friendly cartoon that made its way into the hands of the attendees of the speech. ON THE AIR ARCHIVED 00:01 PDT 25 JUN 1999 A bunch of people wrote to say they missed the interview I did yesterday and asked if there was an archive of it. There is indeed; the fine folks over at The All Games Network keep streaming files of all of their recent shows. The one you're looking for is Game Time for 6/24/99. Fast forward the stream to around 33:30; it goes to approximately 46:30 or so. Thanks to Scott Rubin and Stephanie "Bobbi" Bergman for running such an enjoyable interview!

DON'T MESS WITH THE MASTER 00:17 PDT 24 JUN 1999 Continuing the vein of UFies playing chess from yesterday, Wayne Leishman sent in this link where you can play chess against the Man himself, Garry Kasparov! This neat concept is called "Kasparov against the World." I don't think I'll try it. He'll pull a mate in four and I won't even see it coming. ON THE AIR 00:11 PDT 24 JUN 1999 I've been invited to a brief interview with Stephanie "Bobbi" Bergman on GameTime, a daily internet radio show about games on The All Games Network. It'll be airing around 6:40PM EDT, and you can get to the show by going to the All Games Network home page. The topic will be User Friendly (duh) since we have the honour of being selected as Site of the Week. Heh. Watch me get laryngitis overnight.

UFIES IN CHECK 00:01 PDT 23 JUN 1999 Fancy yourself a Chess player? Be interested in a little head to head (Peer to Peer?) action with fellow UFies around the globe for fun, fame and no profit? If so...We are considering setting up a UFies Community Chess Tournament, however we first need to know how many chess playing UFies would be interested in playing in our online & correspondence tournament. If you are a chess player from Deep Blue to fun loving novice and would think that getting into the game would be up your file (I could not in good taste say "alley") please email us at chess@ufies.org citing "All The Right Moves" in the subject header as well as your skill level (be honest here folx, just like none of us are Linus, none of us are Kasparov either), timezone (to GMT) and available times you can play online or if you prefer, via correspondence chess. THE DETERMINED ONES WILL FIND WHAT THEY WANT 00:03 PDT 22 JUN 1999 It seems that the 'kid-friendly' search engine ISeek in Australia (built around the 'naughty Internet stuff must be blocked' bill) isn't bullet-proof. Try typing in the name of a porn star (say, Jenna Jameson), or a guide to potentially dangerous info (like +drug +recipes) and you'll have all the smut and links you could possibly want. Any determined kid could find this stuff with just a few minutes of effort. Mind you, maybe the idea of ISeek was to make it so that a child wouldn't just stumble across smut in his searches, like a friend of mine did when he was doing some research on 'faeries' (the mythical kind). Boy was he in for a shock. :) Thanks to Joseph Laudadio and John Waldeyer (among many others) who did some digging on that search engine for us. THE OTHER QUAKERS 00:01 PDT 22 JUN 1999 The Religious Society of Friends, also known as 'Quakers' (you know, as in Quaker Oats?), have demonstrated precisely how cool they are. Check out the link to the archives at http://www.quaker.org/, under Quakers in the News. I always had respect for the Friends, but geez, this just makes my day. Thanks dudes! :)

BANNER-BUTTON CONTEST 00:01 PDT 21 JUN 1999 OK, the My Movies and Tuckeroos contests are over, and winners will be announced this week. Here's the next one, especially for the graphically inclined: I'm looking for new banners and buttons for User Friendly. Come up with a banner (468 x 60) or a button (88 x 31) that is under 12k and 4k in file size respectively, and submit it to contests@userfriendly.org. You can use any images that currently exist on the site or in the cartoons, so start cutting and pasting. ;-) Also, please only submit one of each type at maximum. The winner will get a signed t-shirt and a Dust Puppy hat, as well the first User Friendly Mug to come off the line! This contest runs until 1800 PST on June 30th. Good luck!
