| | [WebDiva D] GEEKFINDER GALORE! | Date:Thu Aug 2 16:10:13 2001 |
The Geekfinder activity this month has really been something! We have another featured resume, 2 Successes, one Team for Hire bio, and a resource discussion that sprung out of the last GF news item I have dubbed Between Geeks. Without further rambling, here then is the news:Good luck to Mark, our Geekfinder Featured Resume I have to admit...you plug Geekfinder very well, but like that guy the other week, I have not had even one (1) response. Are these guys really any good? Maybe you can have a look at my resume and tell me if there is an area needing improvement. Mark's Geekfinder resume Congratulations to our two Geekfinder Success Stories! Mandie S. Picture this, a young computer science major in her last semester at school, the semester has just started and the job search is on. That was January. Graduation was May 5 and come April 1, still no job. I had submitted my resume to all the big name job search engines, applied to over 50 positions and I hadn't even gotten a single response....Read full story Steve M. So here's a succinct success story for you. First tried Geekfinder on Wednesday. Got first response on Wednesday. Set up interview on Wednesday....Read full story A Geekfinder first! Team for hire. This request and situation was so interesting that after a bit of communication with Jeff, and the consent of the team, I agreed to profile the team bio. Well, it happened. As part of a massive corporate-wide layoff, our corporation announced on July 19th that it will shut down our office in Tampa effective August 2nd. As a result, I would like to find a new home for a 13 member software development team with proven experience in contract management, project management, architecture, design, test suite design, project implementation, testing, delivery, and support. It is my intention, as their old resource manager (and project manager, and fellow software engineer), to keep the team together, if possible, to continue to take advantage of the synergies that we've developed over the past few years. I've attached a group profile just in case you're able to pass it on....Read full story including team profile & projects summary The sharing of resources from the last Geekfinder news item, when I lamented of anything current and useful to out-of-work geeks, seems to have struck a chord. Thus, I have added the News Item as a permanent link in Geekfinder so that the sharing can continue and resources can be found in one place. If you would rather email your suggestion to me than post it, please feel free to do so. The Geekfinder/UF News Item is now dubbed, Between Geeks

| [Kickstart] DOCTOR DOBB'S JOURNAL - A TINY PERL SERVER PAGES ENGINE | Date:Wed Aug 1 14:43:34 2001 |
| ...from a completely different approach, an ASP/JSP-like substitute using Perl with requirements for portability (non-Apache environments), expandability (development and use of customized tags), and ease-of-use (must work "out of the box"). A Tiny Perl Server Pages Engine - by Andy Yuen The overall similicity of the PSP packages is appealing, in the words of the author: "PSP unites client-side HTML and server-side scripting in a small package that consists of eight small Perl modules. Most of them are around one page in size. The small package is packed with features like custom tag support. Because of its small size and independence of web-server features, PSP pages can be moved easily among different platforms." The difficulty in this, and one of the reasons mod_perl is in many ways better is that PSP must start a new process for every page viewed, which can rapidly degrade server performance. However, if you don't want to do a huge install (as you would with mod_perl or PHP for Apache) or have possible major (ie. days worth) downtime of a website that isn't getting UF-style numbers of viewers, this may be an option for you.

| [Illiad] GONE VIKING AT VIKINGCON | Date:Tue Jul 31 11:08:29 2001 |
Well, not quite yet but I will be in a couple of weeks. VikingCon 18 is being held in Bellingham, WA, August 17-19, and the kind folks of the convention board have invited me down to attend a few panels and generally make trouble for them. There's no official book signing, but if you spot me at the con (and I'll be making the rounds for sure) I'll be more than happy to splash some ink on the inside cover. I've always loved smaller cons of whatever ilk (having helped put together a few myself), so I encourage you to register now and come out for a good time. I hope to see you there!

| [Kickstart] NEW POLL | Date:Tue Jul 31 10:10:54 2001 |
| We loooooove movies...and if we had monumental loads of cash we'd make one, but all the cash got wasted by the dotcoms. But, in the event that we did make one...what would we call it? Tell us in the poll to the left.

| [Illiad] THAT THERE SONY CAMPAIGN | Date:Mon Jul 30 23:21:36 2001 |
Some of you may have noticed a few banners being run for (among other Sony products) Sony's VAIO systems. I'm a big fan of the VAIO laptops, so this just seemed like a good fit for the site. The nitty gritty behind this, however, is that we don't get paid squat for the campaign unless someone buys a SONY product through our banner channel. If you'd like to help us out and are in the market for any of the stuff that Sony is offering, please consider going to their site through our banners and we'll get a small cut of the purchase. Thanks in advance to anyone who decides to avail themselves of this. And if you're buying in bulk and feeling generous, by all means feel free to send me one of the top-end slimline laptops. ;)

| [WebDiva D] NEW INSIDE THE GEEK BAZAAR | Date:Mon Jul 30 14:05:55 2001 |
UF would like to welcome ESBuy.com to the Geek Bazaar. We're also indulging in a bit of shameless self-promotion here because UF Store is in Bazaar Gadgets! But hey, it's our site, our Bazaar, and our brand new Store, so we're entitled to do what we want. And, (insert ominous sounding "dun-dun-dunnn") the next installment of UF:TNG is up. ;-) Thanks to everyone who has been supporting the participating companies in the Bazaar by clicking thru to their sites. Both UF and the participating companies are very encouraged by the response, especially in this whacked-out dot.com economy. We are always on the lookout for potential participating companies for the Bazaar (smaller, interesting-to-you). If you know of a company or product that might be a fit, e-mail us your suggestion and we'll follow up on the lead. Thanks again, folks!
