IMMINENT CHRISTMAS PAR-TAY IN THE UNITED KINGDOMDate:Thu Dec 2 23:53:37 1999
Joel sent this in, for all and sundry:

As usual this time of year, Christmas is coming and the support department are even fatter than they were last year (must be all that sitting in front of their new pooters reading UF I guess ;).

If you're free on 8th December though, Mailbox are running the annual Industry Christmas Party once more. After the mess of the last UK UFie meet, it'd be a great idea to get a load of UK-based UFies in the same room which isn't crowded with beer-swilling yokels at a beer festival ;)

Last year's was great fun, with dancing, karaoke, and lots of vodka jelly. [Vodka jelly? The hell is that? Sounds cool though - Illiad] We also ran a webcam of the event which had 47,000 hits in one night from all over the world.

We're aiming to repeat the success this year on Wednesday 8th December from 6:30pm, in the King's Hall, Fulham SW6, London England. Complete with piano bar, spot-prize karaoke, fully licenced bar and a limited amount of free drink (yes, that's free drink) it should be a good bash for geeks and non-geeks alike; all broadcast live on the 'Net in glorious RealVideo and Shoutcast.

To join the fun, please RSVP to the Christmas Web Site, which is at http://party.mailbox.co.uk/ - that'll get you on the guest list. There's maps of how to get to the party, and also various other shenanigans plus of course the annual PartyCode Recognition Competition at http://party.mailbox.co.uk/party.shtml if you're feeling up to it.

Wow! If I was in the UK around that time I'd jump at the chance, but alas the Large Pond gets in the way. To those who are going, I hope y'all have a great time!

[WebDiva D] Amazing Response!Date:Thu Dec 2 09:44:31 1999
I feel like the most popular gal in the UFieverse today, what with all the translations emailed to me! I am still wading through all the messages, but the spelling of the German greeting has been corrected. My thanks to everyone who sent gif's of the character sets unowned by Diva, and to the folks who have also included grammar and translation lessons...I plan to post a seperate page of these later today.

Keep the translations coming! (Someone is interested in the Bosnian greeting, I haven't received that one yet)

A big thank-you to Aaron, who revised the Geek Days of Xmas from today's UF Yule Central. Now Iambe and I sound ever so much more melodic.

[WebDiva D] Call for 'tis the season translations!Date:Wed Dec 1 21:24:04 1999
Do you have any idea how many ways there are to spell Hannukah? How do you say Merry Christmas in German? Do you even say Merry Christmas in China or Japan? Your dear WebDiva only has so many fonts and character sets in her trusty 'puter. Over the month we want to add international greetings of the season around the virtual tree. I could use your help. Please send me the correct spelling of Merry Christmas or the greeting for the season in your language. If it requires a character set other than english, send it to me as a gif using a 12 point font in black on a white background. Include in your e-mail what language you are sending and what the greeting says.

NO SPOILER MOVIE REVIEW: SLEEPY HOLLOWDate:Wed Dec 1 00:44:00 1999
I'm a Tim Burton fan. I loved his work in The Nightmare Before Christmas and I'm awed by his genius for conveying the mood of a Grimm Brothers fairy tale. His mastery of visual ambience is evident in Sleepy Hollow, and he tells a fair story. Not a great story, but an adequate one.

Admittedly, you have to be a lover of fairy tales to really appreciate Sleepy Hollow, and even then, the movie will leave you a little disappointed. This is a problem with a film maker as respected as Burton, as your expectations tend to soar to some serious heights. Lesser film makers could be excused for the disappointments in Sleepy Hollow, but I judged Burton by his earlier yardsticks. The movie wasn't very cohesive, and some of the direction was mildly confusing. The closeups were often very contrived-feeling, and some of the writing had me wincing a little. Not what I expected from a Burton film.

Nonetheless, the movie does have its high points. I'm really beginning to respect Johnny Depp as an actor, and he's quite enjoyable as the fumbling, fearful but still brave Constable Ichabod Crane. I could've done without Christina Ricci as the female lead, and there was absolutely no chemistry between her and Depp. Although you only get to see his face (well, his head) briefly in the movie, Christopher Walken, my favourite villain-actor, does a grand job being his evil, creepy self. The scenes with the Headless Horseman are positively charged with darkness and force, and the swordplay is riveting.

I give full marks to Burton for the way he handled the horror that was explicit in the original story; he didn't pull punches with what visceral imagery was necessary, and I thought it was neat that there were some very appropriate moments of humour. Is this a full-price flick? No, but it's worth watching on a big screen just for the beauty of Burton's vision. Go on a cheap night, it's certainly worth that.

It looks like the little guy is crossing over to another universe this week. Fellow web'toonist Chris Crosby has the Dust Puppy blipping over into his cartoon strip Superosity. The first strip that DP appears in can be found here. Thanks Chris, and take care of the l'il dustball for me!
