THE BRUCES IN TROUBLE 00:01 PST 25 APR 1999 Batty wrote in with this regarding the Internet censorship issues in Australia: A bit more about the Australian Senate silliness can be read at the EFA site. Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA) has a petition to sign at http://www.efa.org.au/Campaigns/petition.html If we don't act now, Australia will have a firewall installed and *.au will die.

UF PROJECT FOR HUMANITY IRC AGENDA SET 00:05 PST 24 APR 1999 If you're into helping out with the UFPFH (the "oof-poof" or "uff-puff"), don't miss the meeting in IRC on Sunday, 1:00PM PDT. The agenda and other details can be found at http://ufies.userfriendly.org/~iambe. Please bookmark the page as it will be referred to during the meeting. ORSTRYLIAN GOVERNMENT STUPIDITY 00:04 PST 24 APR 1999 This in from Donna: don't know whether you've heard the word, but in yet another flash of blinding political stupidity, *.au may well get clobbered by some incredibly unenforcable censorship legislation. Article at http://www.gtlaw.com.au/pubs/newdarkage.html has some interesting commentary and other links. we live in interesting times. We do indeed. Thanks Donna. CLOTHES FOR THE SMART-DRESSED UFIE 00:01 PST 24 APR 1999 WildOne's been at it again. He has a discussion board up for people who'd like to pontificate about the various items of UFie apparel that may or may not come down the pipe. The bra and panties set may yet come to pass.

MISERY LOVES COMPANY 00:03 PST 23 APR 1999 From Steve Dix: After the"Information Roadkill" article, which was obviously written by a stressed support staff member at an academic institution, you might like to follow it up with this page, written by another extremely stressed support staff member at Welsh Academic Institution. http://www.csking.demon.co.uk/pages/aolusers.htm Chris King, the author of the pages, is a close friend whom I've known since we were at University together, and I think the words "Long-Suffering" were invented especially for him. Especially when you see what passes for a "Student" at Lampeter, where he works. ALT.COMICS.USER-FRIENDLY CREATED 00:01 PST 23 APR 1999 This in from Kethryvis: The control message for alt.comics.user-friendly went out today!!! Great big huge gigantic thanks to Ralf Döblitz over in Germany -- international UFies rule!!) for sending it out for me. Thanks also to everyone who supported the group in alt.config. So bug your news admins...alt.comics.user-friendly is ready to roll!

UF PROJECT FOR HUMANITY IRC MEETING REMINDER 00:06 PST 22 APR 1999 Another reminder that the User Friendly Project for Humanity IRC meeting will be taking place on Sunday, April 25 on Undernet in channel #ufpfh at 1:00PM Pacific Standard Time (-8 GMT). Get all that? April 25. Undernet. #ufpfh. 1:00PM PST. DID YOU FEEL THAT BUMP IN THE ROAD? 00:04 PST 22 APR 1999 Michael Fromberger sent in an interesting essay titled Information Roadkill. Essentially it deals with how the Internet is viewed by the general public as some great oracle, when in fact it's only a tool. If you have a minute, give it a read. VIOLENT AFTERMATH 00:01 PST 22 APR 1999 The sorrow and shock over the Colorado tragedy continues, and I've posted a few of the more detailed and thoughtful responses I received in the Friendly Forum under Aftermath which is a new thread in General Discussions. As for the many sending in thanks for the tribute to the tragedy on yesterday's Static: no thanks are required. I've long been a pacifist, and it was the only appropriate thing to do.

ARCTEREX A-OK 01:08 PST 21 APR 1999 The ever odiferous Arcterex (of ufies.org fame) has returned from surgery safe and sound (minus a small gall bladder and shags of body hair). He still hurts a bit from the cuts made into him, so it was much sport making him laugh and watching him go "HAHAHA-OUCH!!" He twitched lots. He also wanted me to let everyone know that he thanks all of you who wrote in to wish him well. He had plenty of mail to read when he got back home. Thanks folks, and welcome back Arc ol' buddy. :-) UFIE CLOTHING POLL 00:15 PST 21 APR 1999 WildOne- has done it again with another poll, this time asking what kinds of UF apparel people would like to see. Bra and panties? Good GRIEF. ABHORING VIOLENCE 00:09 PST 21 APR 1999 I'm sure you've all seen the message I posted in the small version of the cartoon strip. In case you didn't hear about this tragedy (one of many, to be sure; Kosovo comes to mind), the story is available at http://www.cnn.com/US/9904/21/school.shooting.01/. I think our sub-culture, which often finds enjoyment in violent computer games, needs to make sure that we keep an eye on ourselves and those around us. We don't want the violence in Colorado to ever happen again, nor do we want witch hunts to erupt in the media. I urge everyone to reflect on the immense value of all life, even of people you don't know or don't like. Draw your own conclusions, but at least be aware. ORDER FORM WORKING AGAIN 00:07 PST 21 APR 1999 One thousand apologies for the FUBARed order form, folks. It's fixed now, so you can order yourself a Dust Puppy hat and t-shirt in the Merchandise section. If you submitted an order between Friday, April 16 and Tuesday April 19, it's likely your order was destroyed, but we did get everyone's e-mail addresses; you'll be receiving mail from us if your order was nuked. Things are more or less under control again. :-)

UPDATE ON THE ORDER DATABASE 00:08 PST 20 APR 1999 We've managed to retrieve e-mail addresses from the orders that were placed since the script was updated with the hats as a new item (Friday, April 16), so you'll likely be getting mail from someone if your order was fubared. If you placed an order before the form was updated, it should be fine and your t-shirt(s) should be well on the way. With luck we'll have the order form back up sometime in the afternoon. I'll keep all of you posted. ALT.COMICS.USER-FRIENDLY 00:07 PST 20 APR 1999 Looks like substantial support for the newsgroup exists! Kethryvis is requesting help from a news admin out there that can fire off a control message for the newsgroup. If you can help out please drop her a line! ARCTEREX RECOVERING NICELY 00:05 PST 20 APR 1999 Arcterex, the site owner of ufies.org and a very fine personal friend of mine went in on Monday morning for surgery. Having been through the same operation myself (removing that evil bag of pus known as the gall bladder), I know for a fact the poor bastard is going to be in some pain for a few days. I heard he was recovering nicely from the surgery, and I'll be visiting him in the morning. If you want to send him a get well soon e-mail, I'm sure he'd love it. UF PROJECT FOR HUMANITY IRC MEETING 00:01 PST 20 APR 1999 The first official UFPfH IRC planning meeting will be taking place on Sunday, April 25th, 1:00PM PST on Undernet in channel #ufpfh. The agenda is to establish concrete goals and objectives. Iambe wanted to note that well over 100 volunteers have responded to this initiative and more are coming in. From both myself and the Garden Variety Goddess, thank you to everyone for showing so much support for a cause that could change the lives of the disadvantaged.

!!ORDER FORM DATABASE TRASHED!! 13:40 PST 19 APR 1999 If anyone placed an order for a hat or shirt ever since the hats have been added to the order form, your order has not gone through. I was just informed that the database has been trashed, so please don't place any more orders until we get this sorted. I'll post more details once we get the fires under control. NEO DOING THE LIMBO 00:07 PST 19 APR 1999 Yesterday's cartoon features a scene right out of The Matrix, the movie starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne (who, by the way, shone in this flick). A few people wrote in to say that Neo was shot in that scene; nope, he was grazed, albeit a couple of times, so the analogy still applies. And yes, I'm aware that Manex Visual Effects performed the AWESOME rendering for The Matrix using FreeBSD, and not Linux; Linux, however, is the Great White Hope as an alternative to Microsoft's operating systems, so Linux will get most of the limelight for now. That doesn't mean BSD won't get air time here again -- I think it deserves a few more visits in the strip at the very least. THE OFFICIAL UFPFH INFO SITE 00:04 PST 19 APR 1999 Further to what volunteers have been doing as of late regarding the User Friendly Project For Humanity, the Project members have put up a website devoted to the effort. This one is worth a bookmark folks -- the UFie community showing that it cares about the rest of the world. My hat's off to the Project volunteers. WINNER OF BEST OF SHOW AT INTERNET WORLD 00:01 PST 19 APR 1999 The fine folks over at Webforia won Best of Show at Internet World in L.A. On Thursday I put out a call for beta testers for them, because they're a cool company and because I love document technology. So, in case you're not on their tester list, and you have the time and inclination, head over and sign up - the Webforia guys also have a tendency to hire their beta testers. Great way of getting a job with a cool company.
