BUT WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE PENGUINS?
00:14 PDT 01 AUG 1999
For those who aren't keen on getting a computer case that reminds one of svelte, buoyant seafowl but who still want something spiffy, check out these cases. Reminds me of the iMAC look, really. Thanks to Ben Bleything for the pointer.

TODD HANNA CONTACT IAMBE ASAP
00:03 PDT 31 JUL 1999
That means if your name is Todd Hanna, you need to write Iambe as soon as possible. Garden Variety Goddesses that are ignored throw these dirty great big lightning bolts...

INCUR NOT THE WRATH OF HACKERS
00:01 PDT 31 JUL 1999
Lunatyc sent in this link to a CNN story. He comments: Saw this on the CNN website and thought it was kind of funny. It strikes me as a bad idea for any government organization to start pissing off the internet community by trying to supress information. It is a bad idea, but having visited mainland China before and having a pretty good understanding of the culture, I can see why it's being done -- not that I agree with it.

PENNSIC UPDATE FOR SCUFIES
00:04 PDT 30 JUL 1999
Dave sent this in: Thanks for putting up the pennsic F2F notice. I've got over 20 responses that first day! I just sent out an e-mail to everyone telling them to look in the Pennsic War Chronicle (or what ever they're calling it this year!) for an announcement for the date, time and location, but it will be in the second week. Get a hold of Dave if you want to join in on the UFie gathering at this SCA meet. Dave also came up with a term for UFies who are in the SCA: SCUFies. Okay, you can stop now. :)

A COOL JOB OR WHAT!
00:01 PDT 30 JUL 1999
We just got a really cool job listing at Geekfinder: a Ground Data Systems Programmer where you get to do some spiffy space stuff. To whit: The Mars Volatiles and Climate Surveyor payload is the science payload on the latest NASA Mars mission, called the Mars Polar Lander, and will reach Mars on December 3. The scientific team is based at UCLA and is looking for a programmer for our data processing and analysis environment. The programmer will write and assist science team members in writing applications to produce high-level scientific products from the spacecraft data. I mean come on. If I could code... :-)

I'M NOT QUITE SURE HOW TO TAKE THIS...
00:44 PDT 29 JUL 1999
The scintillating Godmoma sent in a link to a site she built. Heh. I'm not quite sure how to take it, although I have a feeling I'm going to be the envy of a number of geek guys. All I do is draw a cartoon strip -- imagine if I was a rock star. :)

PENGUIN COMPUTER CASES
00:06 PDT 29 JUL 1999
Well, it seems the photos of that penguin computer case released in Japan made a real splash in the community. fhibbard sent in a link to a company that does something similar, so now we all can get one. Heh. Spiffy!

UFIE PICNIC NEAR STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN?
00:01 PDT 29 JUL 1999
Anders Westling has put out a call to all UFie who are within travelling distance of Stockholm, Sweden: I was thinking of arranging a picnic or something for UFies in the vicinity of Stockholm if there is any interest in any such activity. Reply to me if you're interested! Well...too bad I don't live in Scandinavia or I'd be there. Gotta love some of that food...

THE REAL RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS
00:10 PDT 28 JUL 1999
Damien Vryce wrote in response to the funny Dust Puppy heraldic charges that Andrew Brady sent in for yesterday. He came up with this charming coat of arms. A few people also wrote in to point out things like the Dust Puppy heraldic charges "passant" and "guardant" should probably be switched and the images are mirror-imaged for proper heraldic usage. Heraldic animals always face to dexter unless otherwise indicated. Heraldry has always fascinated me, so nit-pick or not, I'm learning.

WELL AT LEAST IT'S NOT BEIGE
00:08 PDT 28 JUL 1999
fhibbard sent in the following photographs, here and here. The more I look at these unusual cases (they've been released in Japan), the more I like them. They crack me up. :)

THIS ISN'T GOING TO HELP MY REPUTATION MUCH
00:04 PDT 28 JUL 1999
Face it, we all love llamas. Jonathan Hackett sent in this truly inspired O'Reilly Cover just for Quake players...with a twist. I hope Tim "The Man" O'Reilly isn't reading this. :)

PORTING MORE FUN TO THE BEOS
00:01 PDT 28 JUL 1999
Gord McLeod wrote in to let me know that Next Generation Entertainment, the largest independent BeOS games developer, has to date announced one game, the Korean action roleplaying game Corum III, and released a port of the columns-like game XJewel, re-titled JewelBox. JewelBox is freely available to BeOS users in order to keep the game-starved hoards occupied while waiting for some of their REAL games to ship. Thanks Gord!

HERALDRY DUST PUPPY STYLE
00:06 PDT 27 JUL 1999
Andrew Brady sent in this most amusing bit 'o art in response to my quip about using the Dust Puppy as a Heraldic charge. Thanks Andrew!

USER FRIENDLY THIS AND THAT
00:04 PDT 27 JUL 1999
A whole lot of people sent in other occurences of the name User Friendly that exist as entities: There's a bunch of SF short stories in a book called User Friendly by Spider Robinson; there's a (non-adult) film made in New Zealand; Ian Anderson, front man for Jethro Tull, on his solo album "Walk Into Light" has a song called User-Friendly. Phew. Well then. The official wordmark here, FYI, is User Friendly the Comic Strip.

UFIE BBS UPDATE
00:01 PDT 27 JUL 1999

I SHUDDER TO THINK...
00:08 PDT 26 JUL 1999
Chris Payne dug up this tidbit: I was reading over the All-Movie Guide and I discovered that the name User Friendly is also the name of a 1992 porn flick directed by Jim Enright (I haven't seen it, so I don't know if it does the comic justice ;) If you want to check out the reference, visit the link below and scroll to the last paragraph: LINK How charming. First a Marilyn Manson song and now this...

TEAM UFIE RC5 BREAKS TOP 40
00:06 PDT 26 JUL 1999
This in from Warlocke: We broke into the Top 40 today, AND broke the 18 MILLION mark. It seems like just yesterday we were excited about having broken the first million. :) Also, the TeamUFies Homepage has moved. Thanks to the Mighty Arcterex, TeamUFies now resides at http://rc5.ufies.org. Those interested in joining should now go to http://rc5.ufies.org/help.html. All Hail The Dust Puppy!

UFIE S.C.A. GATHERING
00:01 PDT 26 JUL 1999
Alpha Geek is getting the word out that he's organizing a face-to-face gathering for UFies who are attending the S.C.A. event Pennsic War. Drop the guy a line if you're into this -- it does appear a great many members of the UFie community are Creative Anachronists as well. (Saaaayy...I wonder if we can get the Dust Puppy introduced as a heraldic charge?)
