...seat belts were banned from use at Indy, under the mistaken belief that it was better to be thrown clear of a crashed car and avoid the fire than to be trapped inside by a jammed seat belt. Part of this was based on the belief that the human body could not survive more than about 8 Gs in a crash situation, and it was thought that pretty much any crash powerful enough to make restraint effective would be fatal anyway.
