[smiffy] Diary of Member smiffy Updated/Posted: 2008-12-29 21:16:03

My real name is Matthew Smith - Smiffy is a nickname dating back to primary (elementary) school and one that I use for as much as my web presence as is possible. I answer to Matthew, Matt, Smiffy, 'Oi, you!', and various other - often unflattering - epiphets.

Work: I am a freelance web apps developer (Linux/OpenSolaris/FreeBSD/etcetera, Apache2, Perl, PHP if I can't avoid it, MySQL) and general IT consultant. Using Unix-ish for over two decades - was working with AIX before I ever saw my first Pee Cee. My development environment consists of gvim, Firefox an eyeProd Nano and all the stuff you'd expect to get from a *NIX command line.

Not work (warning: possible open comments): interests include food and drink (growing, preparation and consumption) reading - generally fantasy, music, electronics (especially combinations of the latter two) and lifting weights.

Happily married with dogs.

Geeky Favourites

  • Interpreted language - Perl
  • Compiled language - C (the original one, not ++)
  • Database - MySQL
  • Editor - vi/vim/gvim
  • Operating System - no real favourite amongst the Unix derivatives; tend to go with Linux on the desktop and for odd applications, FreeBSD, Solaris or Linux for servers, FreeBSD or Linux for 'odd' applications.
  • Boot system - OBP; the world would be a better place if this replaced all those horrible 'BIOS' things out there.
  • Coffee - espresso only, prefer varietals, Sumatra Mandheling, New Guinea Peaberry, Cafe de Cuba
  • Soft drink - none. Soft drinks are Foul Muck(TM) designed to profit only dentists and those making diabetes drugs. During the day - after my breakfast espressos - I drink either filtered (to 1 micron) rainwater or green tea (brewed from filtered rainwater.) Alcohol permitted after 1700hrs.

Why am I here?

It started off with the cartoon - I was actually pointed to a German version before I discovered the original. I spotted this rather strange discussion board filled with people with weird names and kept my distance. It took a while to understand what was going on but now I feel very privileged to be a part of such a wonderful, supportive, community.
