Operations Comms channel crackles with X's voice, "Did either of you just go to public mode? I rather hope you didn't, otherwise you just shined a big light on where we are."
Block turns slightly toward Ace, moving his thumb back and forth between himself and Ace. "We're Doc Wagon." he explains, also on comms. "It would looks *really* funny to anyone reviewing the logs if the scanners in here did not notice us." Block turns back towards the foyer watchfully. "I'll kick it off when when we're out of sight of the monkeys outside." Thoughtfully, that makes a lot of sense under the current conditions.
Ace pauses next to the foyer-long desk, then vaults over it, barely touching it yet silently landing in a crouch on the other side. In what he suspects *looks* like an alert stance, Ace minces towards the doorway from which the clattering randomly issues forth.
Tracking the clattering noise, it seems to be coming from a partially-opened door, seven feet tall and stylishly framed in brushed aluminum, its almost-luminous panels a richly-polished dark maple - or that's how it looks, anyway. You note that this is a fully-automatic door, having absolutely NO handles on either side of its extravagantly-rendered construction. The door appears to have been jammed electronically, as there is no physical object that you can see (on the astral or otherwise) interposing to keep it open. (It's not clattering randomly; whatever that happens to be is somewhere further down the hall.) Naturally, there is not a "door control" module in sight anywhere. That's probably handled somewhere in the building's control network.
As the team sweeps past the foyer-long desk towards the doors beyond, and there are a few of them, the byplay presentation of logos, images, and "find-me" maps fades rapidly from view as once-dormant systems return again to standby. The absence of information actually makes the room seem more peaceful.
Beyond the doorway there is a noticable difference in maintenance: boot dust (tracked from someplace else) runs down the hallway, disappearing somewhere in the gloom beyond. Strangely enough, the lighting systems that normally illuminate this hallway to an intolerant stark white are all defunct, and your presence here doesn't automatically turn them on (they have their own sensors to detect the presence of humans and metahumans - people by any other name, actually - but for whatever reason THIS hallway's lighting system is no longer washing this hallway in brilliance, regardless of your being there. And this strikes you as odd. (That's the point, here. Well, that, and the noticable dust/dirt tracked down the hallway...)
There is no debris, per se, just dust and dirt, and even that will probably get wiped out (sanitized!) if (and when!) the cleaners/bots make their way back up here. (Not sure if a mutli-corporate monster like this one would have people for cleaners or not...) The hallway looks like it goes on forever (it's all in the way the hall is decorated, made to look longer than it really is) with several other doorways (all closed) that mark its actual length. Teh dirt/dust tracks go down to the fifth door, and turn right into what looks like a double-door assembly. You figure that the distance might be forty to sixty feet, because the reflective metals in here give your range measuring gear (internal or otherwise) fits gauging the actual distance. The corporate paranoia being what it is, the entire hallway either refects or outright kills frequencies that might make distance measuring (or detection) useful.
Behind you the glitzy party-like red-and-blue flashes give way to the hallway, darkened and somber as it vanishes ahead into the distance. (What a comparison!)
Ace tends to remain in the lead of the party, scanning seemingly in all directions at once as you approach the partially opened door, the clatter reporting randomly from somewhere beyond, with Block maintaining constant vigilance just behind him to the left. X is, of course, almost impossible to see, ghosting along behind the two at an indeterminate distance. |
