Aspartame, aka PhenylKetoNeurics / Phenylalanine, is a mild neurotoxin to begin with.
Ketones are in your blood; they're proteins.
Diabetics have to test via urine sampling to determine if they're releasing proteines like they're not supposed to.
An excessive build up of Ketones in the blood can cause coma and death - I know this from first hand experience as I am a Diabetic Keto Acidosis [DKA] Coma Survivor.
Neurics has to do with the brain chemistry, the balances thereof, and (usually) adverse reactions.
So it's NO surprise to me that it's not healthy, but then it's not healthy in the same way chocolate isn't.
A little isn't going to hurt you, daily ingestion of two or three doses isn't going to affect you much, and the "trigger amount" (the level of which you need to intake to trigger a reaction) is either so low (for long term build up in the system) or so HIGH (as in taking ONE massive dose), as to be incredibly UNscary.
For example, the trigger amount to kill a rat using chocolate is either a few grams per day *for nearly 80 years*, or almost *50 pounds* all at once... Now ask me if I'm going to eat chocolate in either quantity? Most 'bars I eat are a few ounces at most, and I have one bar a month, tops. Am I worried chocolate is going to kill me? Nope...
Same thing goes for Diet soda's & artificial sweetners. I don't use A.S.'s much (I don't eat a lot of sweet things, period), so I'm not worried about them appearing in my food. I drink a lot of Diet Pepsi, sure, but even with my indulgence, it'll maybe shorten my life by what, a few months at best? I'm already living on borrowed time, so what's a few minutes less of it at the end when I'll probably already be ravaged by other, WORSE aspects of Diabetes?
(Sobering thought, huh?) <8-) *HUGS*
That's the realities of it, Folks.
Sure, it's not HEALTHY, but it also takes a lot of it over a long period of time, or a TON of it eaten all at once, to DO anything to you...
"Don't sweat the small stuff, and remember - it's ALL small stuff!" hehehehe
And besides, I'm an American... To quote George Carlin "We EXPECT carcinogens in our food, our drinking water, hell in the AIR! Now shut up and GIVE ME THAT TRIPLE BACON CHEESEBURGER!"
(Cough, giggle) <8-)P Sorry... hehehe
Now, before you shrug off my comments as uninformed, realize that I, too, have done extensive research on the various chemicals I have to control my body's exposure to.
Yes, while Aspartame and other A.S.'s aren't exactly good for you, they're by NO means as harmfull as people tend to report...
For example:
Just Googled "Aspartame" and came up with the following:
[Link 1] Aspartame (Nutrasweet) Toxicity Information Center www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/
[Link 2] Aspartame / NutraSweet Dangers in Pregnancy www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/preg.html
Holistic Medicine is, for those who believe in such, a fine thing, but too many of it's followers have come across, at least to me personally, as complete zealots incapable of listening to any other point of view than their own. This is NOT meant as a generalization, merely as an observation of the Holistic-supporters I've *personally* met. So, for me, I ignore this link due to the fact that, even after checking the site, it comes down to FUD disguised as Fact. (Some of the symptoms it lists as of Aspartame are also contributed to *the common cold*... Something's fishy, eh?)
[Link 3] Aspartame is NOT safe. DORway to Discovery has the WHOLE truth! www.dorway.com/
[Link 4] Bad News about products with Aspartame www.dorway.com/badnews.html
Again, this site amounts to FUD as Fact. I tried to read some of the articles listed there, but it still came across as "And this happened to a friend of my mother's friend's cousin, so I *KNOW* it must be true!" and made me close the window in disgust. I want *facts*, not opinions. I can base a choice on nothing but opinions, but not without at least TRYING to verify/disprove SOME of what's been said... Gotta have facts - JUST the facts, M'am... <8-)

Ok, you're linking an artificial sweetner and HITLER?! Pardon me while I flush your FUD-filled link straight down the crapper where it belongs...
[Link 6] Aspartame Information Center www.aspartame.org/
Not bad. Presented well, full of links to scientific studies (JAMA anyone?), Doctor's results of Aspartame studies, and "Myths versus Fact" areas that, oops!, blatantly dispell everything the first five links were screaming... Considering the FUD I seemed to be getting from the first 5, this makes me treat the 6th as a bit more rational, and *legitamite* source of information. Hummm....
[Link 7] Sites by Aspartame's Critics - www.aspartame.org/critics.html
This would be even better of an information source if the site still existed. Instead it now points to PRO aspartame data... http://www.aspartame.org/aspartame_experts_consumer.html which links to such as "Does Aspartame Kill?" ( http://www.doesaspartamekill.iwarp.com/ ) that says, point blank NO, and to an "Urban Legends" section ( http://www.aspartame.org/aspartame_experts_consumer.html#ul ) that disproves EVERY claim made by the first 5 sites... Hummm, 2 sources that disprove / discredit the first 5? Those same 5 filled with FUD... Hummm, now WHOM o' WHOM shall I choose to believe?
[Link 8] Aspartame Consumer Safety Network http://web2.iadfw.net/marystod/
Ok, it SOUNDS like it would be a good source, but the first thing you see are badly animated spinning logo's (red-circle-slash-ASPARTAME), "DEADLY DECEPTION: STORY OF ASPARTAME" (broken link, OOPS!), and an audio book version of that 250 page document, which *also* has a broken link. (Sighs) Ok, you scroll down the page, and you get quotes from sources like "The Winds" (whom?) and from *Flight Instructors* (???!!!). Googling for the founder of this site, Mary Nash Stoddard, gives you LOTS of links to her writings, *and to the fact that she runs a media company designed soley to sell the book who's link is broken in the first part of her site*... Hummm, methinks we have a conflict of interest here. Are you trying to warn people about the dangers you claim, or make money off their fear that you're helping cause? Naughty naughty...
So, first 8 Google hits result in 5 that feel like FUD, and 3 that give me the impression of truth.
End result, I am slightly curious as to the claims of the first five (if aspartame really IS so bad for me, then why hasn't someone sued the FDA *and won* for the alleged damage?) but the data from the other 3 tempers my curiosity into the realm of "Sounds like another urban legend link I need to send back to the emails I get 'warning' me about aspartame..." *sigh*
All in all, sure I'll try to limit my exposure to *additional sources* of aspartame, but you'll get my Diet Pepsi from me when you pry it from my cold, dead lips... heheheheheh <8-)P PPPLLLBbbbb....
