Hmm. That's strange. by Longfist2014-12-31 07:35:09
Off-The-Shelf DC-DC Converter. Maybe quite small. by pbarnrob 2014-12-31 15:19:40
An efficient one (commonly 80-95%) that accepts the range of battery voltages expected (-48V is common in phone systems, with battery sag accounted for) and puts out a regulated +5V for the Arduino.

Sized to the power requirements, maybe Schottky-diode-steered to come in parallel to the output of the onboard regulator, with a common 9V battery for backup in case of other disconnects; belt-and-suspenders.

Sense those disconnects, with appropriate sequences of recovery. Disasters usually involve at least TWO failures at just the wrong time.

An old Ma Bell coder once told me; "Never test for an error condition you're not ready to handle!"

(Thanks for the pointer, Klaranth!)
