As he enters the elevator & the doors close behind his butt, Ace realizes that he's standing !RIGHT! in front of them.
He'll be the first thing anyone or anything sees when the doors open.
He'll be the first thing to start doing a herky-jerky dance o' death as the bullets fill him like holes in Swiss cheese.
So with thoughts of a leaky sieve jetting gouts of tomato sauce & ichorous spaghetti noodles cavorting through his head, Ace quickly steps to the side.
Pressing his back to the wall beside the door to his left, he tries to make it look casual, nonchalant, & as if he didn't just envision himself as a wholey holey corpse.
A quick look around the car, the floors, the walls, the ceiling, the apparent lack of Mister X.
He'll smile at Block standing opposite, pretend to relax as if he hasn't a care in the world, & tap a foot as if utterly bored with this part of the progress.
A classic "trapped in an elevator, gotta wait until we get there, are we done yet?" sort of attitude.
Of course that's just a mask to cover the fact that he could REALLY use a fresh pair of skivvies, a plate of bbq wings, & another spin on the Echoplex dance floor with some cute little Frau...
When the doors start to slide open Ace tenses, finger along the trigger guard, fist clenched around the grip, & instantly scanning for whatever awaits us.
Are there any hints, chatter, or noise on the electronic to note our arrival?
Is there anyone or anything I can see beyond the doors as they open?
Can I hear any footsteps, whispers, shuffling of feet, chittering, or clanking beyond?
Can I smell anything that implies something foul is afoot, or is that just my gas from lunch?
All these questions & more race through my head as I try not to be the primary target for any trigger happy guards outside the elevator car.
I think to myself "What would my favorite spy-guy do in this situation?"
The answer comes to me in a flash & I instantly put it into motion.
Diving out the door to one side, shoulder roll up into a knealing position, gun out in a sweeping arc, ready to blast anything that even LOOKS at me funny.
