The article I originally linked to is dated 2009. I did a little more poking around (the internet LOVES a little poking around, and loves a little MORE poking even better!) and found one dated July 2011. This one has a gadget with a light, rigged to an i-phone, to read the tattoo. As of this article in MIT Technology Review, the data is still exported to a computer for analysis.
