| | [sanity] QUAKE III ARENA SKINS & LEVELS CONTEST!!! | Date:Fri Sep 15 15:40:40 2000 |
A very quick heads up to those of you who are used to running for your lives and living in the danger zone! Well, those of you who are Quake III enthusiasts (paranoid people absolved) at any rate. UserFriendly.Org is sponsoring a Quake III skins, level and modeling contest in cahoots with Loki Entertainment. We'll be announcing the winner at the Annual Linux Showcase in Atlanta this October 13th so start soon or else you'll miss out on the kickin' prizes. We want to see what Quake III would look like if Pitr read the Evil Geniuses for Dummies chapter on going Postal for fun and profit, or if the Chief decided that golf wasn't as fun as target practice. You know, give it a definitive UF style! We have a "leet" panel of judges so if you want some real feedback or just want to strut your bad-graphics-self then read on for the complete set of details and judging criteria.

| [Illiad] THE BORG HAS LANDED | Date:Thu Sep 14 01:59:53 2000 |
| If you're a Canadian, you've probably heard of Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie, a talented laugh-riot troupe who have graced us with some high-orbit comedy performances. Wes Borg of the Trolls has offered this hilarious skit, (caution: needs QuickTime) proving his experience in the front-line tech support trenches. When you get to the page, click on the big pic of Wes and away you go. Some of it was so familiar I rolled up into a ball and begged for my teddy bear. ;)

| [WebDiva D & Yohimbe] CAPT. X, WE APPLAUD YOU | Date:Wed Sep 13 08:02:57 2000 |
| For those of you who may not read the cartoon comments, or missed this one due to its early post, Capt.X has created the Iliad of Illiad...and it is the work of a true genius! [Cribbed from the Alexander Pope interpretation of The Iliad of Homer.] In Despair stood Mike, yon direful Man, His Soul tormented by curs'd Soda Can. Now approaches Miranda, in her beauteous Way, Onward she leads to that Fear he must slay. With Boldness (she cry'd) thou must enter this Shrine, Find Peace in thy thoughts and in Caffeine divine. Thus spoke the Maid, and Elate he agreed, For Vain is the Man who denies Caffeine need. Yet there between Counter and unrestrain'd Door, Approach'd now a Wretch, seeming dull to his Core. How Pale was his Face! How Clouded his Eyes! Such ill-fated Anguish was borne in his guise! What accurst Shade draws near? (Mike thus now inquires) How escap'd yon Wraith from Pluto's dark Spires? To th' question thus pos'd, the Caffeine priest replies, The heav'nly Daystar did freshly arise. The Pow'r of the Daystar, the Pow'r of the Light! Of all the Geek Woes, O Hackers, take Fright! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (Okay, so it doesn't really sound much like Pope's style, but the idea of Iliadizing Illiad was so obvious, I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. And I could really use a shot of something right about now, too -- trying to phrase things in Alexander-Popese can do a real number on your head.)

If yours *isn't* here, please email me again and I'll put it up. At any rate... wow! We had a UFie engagement.. congrats to Xaverri and Psychotique of Salt Lake City, Utah who are planning a May wedding!! We've also had two UFie births, UFie Slof and his wife welcomed Sander into their home, and #userfriendly regular Rans0m and his wife welcomed daughter Emma to their family as well. Congrats to all of you! There are a bunch of new entries in the Locator and a new easy-to-find format, and a few new meets in the Meets section. We've also gotten wind of a South African Linux Conference planned for next year.. keep your eyes on the Bulletin Board for updates on that. Sooooo... that's about it! If you want to find UFies in your area, check the Locator... if you don't see an entry for your area, let me know and we'll make one!
