Oh gawd, I hate making cat5... by ShadowSystems 2022-02-27 15:13:23
Even though the high mucky mucks had ordered the upgrade, my immediate boss tried to cheap out on the deal so he could claim the savings on our department budget.
He sent me & another PFY to our local Fry's Electronics (no longer in business) to pick up a box of bulk cat5 cable, bags of RJ45 cable ends, a (singular) crimping tool, & a (singular) testing tool.
The other PFY & I were ordered to create all the cat5 cables we needed.
We pointed out that the cost for all the sub-bits far outweighed the cost of the premade cat5 cables from the exact same store.
Boss was having none of that & told us to "do the damned job".
Ok, fine, but I asked for him to send me an email specifying the build order.
Boss got grumpy, threatened to fire me if I didn't stop wasting time, but shot me the email I'd requested.
The other PFY called me crazy, but I smiled & replied "like a fox".
We used the company CC to buy the specified bits, made sure to get a receipt, & came back to the office to get started.
What should have been a job that took under a week to wire up an office of a few hundred computers, the other PFY & I were at it nearly a month *just making the cables*.
The Regional VP came by to find out WTF was taking us so long.
He nearly went nuclear when he realized we were making each cable by hand.
He thundered that we could have purchased premade cables & done the job much quicker.
The other PFY turned pale as he figured we were about to get thrown under a bus.
I went to my terminal, printed out the email from my boss ordering me to do it his way, & handed it to the VP.
"I know that. YOU know that. But HE threatened to fire me if I didn't do it his way."
The VP read the email, thanked me, & walked away.
About an hour later the VP comes back, hands me HIS company CC, & tells me to go to Fry's & buy the premade stuff "So you can finish this job before I retire."
I smiled, saluted, & grabbed the other PFY to assist me in the shopping trip.
We came back, cables in hand, & started wiring up the office immediately.
Meanwhile the VP had *personally* ordered my boss to take all the bulk supplies, crimper, & tester back to boss' office, where he was to sit & do nothing but make cables until every last inch of cable, every last RJ45 cable end, & bit of supplies had been turned into a properly tested & viable cable.
The office later learned that our boss had gotten such an a3 chewing that it was a miracle he still had cheeks left upon which to sit, much less a job by which to pay the charge he'd ordered for the botched cabling job.
*Cackle*

The other PFY & I had the office done in record time, and the VP not only authorized our OT, but gave us each a nice bonus cheque in thanks for "going above & beyond".
As the icing on the cake, the price of the OT & bonus' were deducted from my boss' pay.
*ROFLMAO*
