And I still get to do that fairly often. We have the pass through plugs now, too.
Technically it is to allow the twist to extend right to the end of the plug.
But it also allows you to verify your wire order easily BEFORE crimping,
and correct if necessary. I learned a while ago that just because you had
everything lined up nicely and correctly before feeding it INTO the plug
didn't mean some pair wouldn't 'switch places' where you couldn't see it
clearly before reaching the prongs. Always check twice, THEN crimp.
