The management apologizes for the unfinished work appearing below entitled "So You Want To Be A Troll". this work is in progress and will be finished as the author stops surfing Disney pr0n long enough to do so.


So You Want To Be A Troll?

Throughout their history, one fact about message boards has always held true: they are populated by people. And bots. But mostly people. Anyways, people are funny little animals, usually resembling bald apes with smaller genitalia and slightly bigger brains. But only slightly, and that is where the message board troll comes in to play.

Perhaps it would be best to start with a definition. The troll is defined by the always honorable Jargon File as follows:
"a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames... Derives from the phrase “trolling for newbies” which in turn comes from mainstream “trolling”, a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it."

What this means is that a troll is a post designed to make the less intelligent (read: the majority of netizens) respond en masse in a predictable fashion that reflects on themselves rather poorly. Thus there are 3 key factors which must be present for a troll to be judged successful: 1) A large number of replies, 2) predictable responses seen many times in many other discussions, and 3) low overall intelligence displayed in the replies. So how does one go about achieving a successful troll that fulfills all of the above criteria? I'll address that in the next installment.
